content

The spectrum of topics covered by the Berliner Debatte Initial ranges from transformation and Eastern European research, which was the focus in the 1990s, through the history of ideas, philosophical and social theoretical issues to current debates in economic policy, social theory and cultural sociology. The journal is aimed at a broad, interdisciplinary readership with the intention of critically reflecting on the socio-economic, political and cultural processes of change in Germany, Europe and the world and initiating public debates about them.

The self-image of the magazine was outlined in issue 4/1990. She “sees in science, true to the tradition of the Enlightenment, which once had a home in Berlin, the general of all human views and insights, from whatever special position, party-political point of view or ideological prerequisite they are always won.” INITIAL sees itself fundamentally committed to anti-fascist and democratic goals and wants to "not speak to any particular party, but rather be a social-theoretical forum to discuss scientific considerations of different schools of thought on economic, sociological, political, psychological, cultural and ecological problems of social progress". The commitment to enlightenment in the sense of a modern understanding of the Kantian project of liberation from self-inflicted immaturity was essential from the beginning, as was the reference to evolutionary theory and a pragmatic discursive reformism, combined with the belief that the world could get better. The societal, social, economic and cultural upheavals in East Germany and in Eastern Europe are topics of the magazine. There are also humanities topics - from community and society to war and envy to the Marxian legacy, (economic) depression, Long Waves and the legacy of Keynes - as well as regional - China, India, Israel, Europe - and cultural studies topics. The magazine has been going beyond the casual observation of mass spectator sports since 1995, i. H. since the peak of the German boxing boom with the former German boxer Henry Maske , has critically accompanied the re-establishment of professional boxing in the German public and its media landscape.
