The unitjournal for the theory and practice of scientific socialism  - was the theoretical journal of the SED . The magazine appeared monthly from 1946 to autumn 1989 when it was discontinued during the peaceful revolution in the GDR .

The magazine appeared for the first time in February 1946 in preparation for the compulsory unification of the SPD and KPD to form the SED under the title Monthly for the Preparation of the Socialist Unity Party . Until the “Unification Party Congress” in April 1946, it was published jointly by the Central Committee of the SPD and the Central Committee of the KPD . From May 1946 the party executive of the SED was the sole publisher, the title was now a monthly for socialism , from January 1947 then the theoretical monthly for socialism . From issue 8/1950 to the discontinuation of the magazine with the number 44/1989, the subtitle was magazine for theory and practice of scientific socialism .

The magazine contained articles with theoretical content, especially on the history of the labor movement and on philosophical and economic questions. The authors of the contributions were leading SED functionaries, senior employees of central party institutes such as the Institute for Marxism-Leninism , the Academy for Social Sciences and the Party College, and other cadres with close ties to theories .

The documents handed down by the unit , u. a. Minutes of editorial meetings, documents from conferences and information to the Politburo are stored in the Federal Archives , Berlin Branch ( SAPMO ).
