background

Kollegah (left) and Slick One

Selfmade Records was founded in 2004. The following year, the sampler Schwarzes Gold was the first release of the independent label. A large number of German rappers from the Ruhr area are represented on this. In 2007 , the second sampler Chronik 1 was released , following the album Harlekin by rapper Favorite . From the point of view of the label founder Slick One, the sound carrier is “ the first real label sampler ”, as only the four rappers and the producer Rizbo , who are contractually bound to self-made records , can be heard on it. The only exception to this is the hip-hop musician Flipstar , who was also involved in founding the independent label. The main task of the sampler is therefore to present the Düsseldorf label and its members.

production

The responsible producer of the sampler is Rizbo, who provided the background music for the title Intro , Way up , Hater , You're not like Fav , When it gets cold , (Show the people) who's the boss , 16 bars , run out of it Club , Nasatruppen , No way back , To the top , Shotgun (Selfmade Remix) and Outro . Some songs were created in collaboration with other producers. The way up was produced together with G. Bregović, hater with Sixjune, when it gets cold with Alper and (Show the people) who is the boss and run out of the club with TONI. Furthermore, the hip-hop musician Flipstar contributes a beat with SR Time . In addition, 327 street sounds were produced by Epileptik Beats, Geardeaus by Akasha One and A Good Day to Die by Sixjune and Topbeats.

The beat for way up could only be used after consultation with Sin & VIP, a US rapper from Serbia and a Serbian group. They used the original beat for their mixtape Rane . For the track Hater , Rizbo used a sample from "No Good" by The Prodigy .

The audio post- processing, the so-called mastering , was carried out by Benz Reibach in the Bilkbass studio.

The four rappers are shown on the cover of the sampler. These each take up a quarter of the area. Every rapper holds a sign with their name printed on it in their hands. The label name and logo as well as the album title can be seen in the middle. The writing is highlighted with a "gold foil".

The photos used for the booklet and for marketing were shot by Frederic Thelen. Patrick van den Heuvel from Pleasure Artworks was responsible for the design of the artwork.

The Düsseldorf label shot a video for the song Weg nach oben . The clip was played in the hip-hop music shows on MTV TV. On Chronicle 1 , the video can be seen as an addition.

Before the sampler was published, a ten-minute snippet , a compilation of excerpts from the pieces from Chronicle 1 , was made available on the Internet. The snippet will be moderated by Favorite.

The four hip-hop musicians from Selfmade Records completed a joint tour from October 18 to November 2, 2007. This was called Showtime, Bitch! -Tour titled. The program of the concerts lasted two and a half hours. Befriended rappers also appeared in the opening act in the various venues. For example Pimpulsiv in Braunschweig, Pretty Mo in Munich and Casper in Cologne and Dortmund.

criticism

Chronicle 1 was rated primarily by media dealing with rap music. The reviews of the website Rap.de, the hip-hop magazine Juice and the e-zine Laut.de can be cited as examples . The editors of Juice rated the sampler positively, which goes hand in hand with the evaluation by Rap.de, whose reviewer rated the album as entertaining and varied. From Laut.de's point of view, the sound carrier is average to good with three out of a possible five evaluation points.

The evaluation of the beats produced by Rizbo was very different. The responsible editor of the Juice sees the beats as "mostly decent". In the evaluation by Rap.de it is positively emphasized that the productions are adapted to the different styles of the performing artists. This is in contrast to the opinion of Philipp Gässlein, who formulated the criticism for the Laut.de e-zine . He finds many instrumentals unsuitable for the label's rappers and cites as examples the titles Kein Weg Zurück and Weg Nach Oben , on which Favorite “cannot […] fully develop”, and Hater , who does not fit the verses performed by Kollegah . In contrast, Gässlein praises the beats of the pieces A good day to die and show the people who's the boss .

Rapper Favorite

In the opinion of the Juice editorial team, Kollegah's songs are the “highlights of the sampler”. Rap.de perceives the rapper's rhymes as "remarkable", but points out negatively the missing topics, the boring flow in some places and the low level of content Kollegahs. From the point of view of juice , favorites are often “on the verge of good taste”, but they offer particularly entertaining titles. Favorite is seen by Rap.de as the label's best rapper, as his lyrics are convincing "with his incredible pun and sparkling humor". The song 16 Bars and, in stark contrast to the Gässlein review, Favorites verse in No way back represent the highlights of the sampler.

According to Juice, Shiml's songs are “absolutely above average”, but are out of place next to the entertaining contributions by Favorite and Kollegah. The editor of Rap.de also finds the pieces Wenn es Kalt und Straightforward "out of place" and points out that the lack of humor in the title of Shiml, the sampler at these positions is "slightly unbearable". On this point, too, Laut.de's criticism is in stark contrast to Juice and Rap.de. Philipp Gässlein praises Shiml's voice, with which he creates “a breathtaking atmosphere” so that the title When it gets cold and straight ahead “literally grows beyond itself”. In addition, Slick One is also praised, as it dispenses with complex texts and thus represents a "counter pole" to the rappers under contract with him.
