Josef Wurzian , from 1850 Knight von Wurzian (born March 9, 1806 in Windisch-Feistritz , Lower Styria , † May 27, 1858 probably in Vienna ) was the personal physician of the Austrian Field Marshal Josef Graf Radetzky .

biography

Wurzian was the son of the doctor Prof. Lorenz Wurzian († 1848 in Bergamo ) and his wife Elisabeth († 1831). He studied medicine at the Josephinum in Vienna. From 1 July 1826, he served in the Imperial Army as a medical assistant in the infantry - regiment No. 30, then he went through the lower and upper doctor various regiments until in 1836 the regiment physician in. Kürassier regiment "Graf Auersperg" no. 5 was promoted.

In 1845 he was assigned to Field Marshal Graf Radetzky, on May 27, 1848, he was appointed as a quasi medical officer, and on May 16, 1849, he was appointed real medical officer. Here he was in charge of the medical services during the Italian campaign. Among other things, he also took part in the Battle of Novara (1849) .

Because of his services in this campaign, he was awarded the Order of the Iron Crown III on July 14, 1849 . Class excellent. After being awarded this order, he was raised to the hereditary Austrian knighthood on March 21, 1850 in Vienna as the "Knight of Wurzian" . On November 30, 1848, he had already received the great gold civil merit medal.

On December 8, 1851, he was promoted to senior medical officer, 2nd class, and finally, on October 6, 1855, to senior medical officer, 1st class.

Radetzky was very close to Wurzian. When the field marshal had an accident in Milan in January 1858 and his body was transferred in a coffin on a cannon mount similar to a procession from Milan to Austria, Wurzian sat all the way in front of the coachman as an escort of honor. In the process, he contracted severe bilateral pneumonia , the consequences of which he died shortly afterwards in Vienna.

In the Heldenberg memorial ( Lower Austria ), Radetzky's grave, a bust of Wurzian is placed next to those of other participants in the Italian campaign. Parts of his estate and a large-format portrait of him are in the Army History Museum in Vienna.

Wurzian was an honorary member of the medical faculty at Karl Ferdinand University in Prague . He was the great-grandfather of Alfred von Wurzian .
