Chronik 3 is a sampler by the hip-hop label Selfmade Records , which was released on October 9, 2015 via the Düsseldorf label.

background

After the second label sampler Chronik 2 was released by Selfmade Records in 2009, Shiml and Casper separated from the record company at the end of the year. In the following years the label celebrated success with the rappers Kollegah and Favorite. In addition, the groups 257ers and Genetikk as well as Karate Andi received artist contracts. With Jung, Brutal, Gutaussehend 2 , DNA , King , Boomshakkalakka , Neues von Gott and Achter Tag , Selfmade Records released six albums between 2013 and 2015, which reached number 1 in the German charts. At the end of August 2015, the release of a third compilation album was announced on the occasion of the label's tenth anniversary. On August 28, 2015 the cover and the track list were published and SSIO, Casper, Farid Bang, Marteria, Shiml and MontanaMax were named as guest rappers. According to Kollegah, working on the sampler is more difficult than on his solo projects because the eight hip-hop musicians have to be willing to compromise. In the context of the project Young, Brutal, Good- Looking, it was already problematic to come to an agreement with “ two people on a beat ”.

Versions

Chronicle 3 was published in a standard version on CD and digitally. In addition, a limited deluxe edition was released as a box. In addition to the sampler, this includes another CD with all instrumental versions of the songs, a poster, six stickers and the hardcover book Selfmade Records - The first 10 years of the most successful German hip-hop label .

With Chronik 3 , the title song of the sampler by Kollegah, SSIO and Karate Andi was published as the first video on September 6, 2015. This was created under the direction of Markus and Michael Weicker from The Factory in Cubic Studios Düsseldorf. In mid-September, the visual implementation of Keine neue Freunde , a solo song by Kollegahs, followed. The third video was made for the piece Antimatterie by Karate Andi, Favorite and Shneezin. In mid-October the video for Selfmade Allstars was released, a piece by all Selfmade Records artists that is not included on the sampler.

Chronicle 3 entered the German album charts at number 1 . The hip-hop label Selfmade Records was able to occupy number 1 in the German album charts for the seventh time in a row after Jung, brutal, gutaussehend 2 , DNA , King , Boomshakkalakka , Neues von Gott and Achter Tag . In addition to the album charts, some pieces from the sampler were also able to enter the German single charts. The title song Chronik 3 by Kollegah, Karate Andi and SSIO rose to rank 88 and was able to reach position 77 in the following weeks. After six weeks, the song left the charts. Kollegah's contribution No New Friends climbed to number 65 and stayed in the singles charts for five weeks. With Red Light District Anthem , another piece of Kollegahs positioned itself at number 68 in the singles charts. Medusa , a collaboration between Kollegah and Farid Bang, reached number 90.

criticism

The e-zine Laut.de rated Chronik 3 with four out of a possible five points. According to the editor Dani Fromm, Selfmade Records have developed through " increasingly professional, often innovative, but above all tireless work [...] around the linchpin Elvir Omerbegovic into a power that no one can ignore for a long time ". The productions of the pieces are highlighted positively. In particular, the contributions by Alexis Troy, whose “ sound one to one” [corresponds] to the optics of the third 'Chronicle': predominantly black, a little white and golden accents. “The beat to Koks, Nutten, Glocks turns out to be the“ only slack ”. Kollegah is particularly convincing when he for the song No New Friends " lets his cover sink with his smugness and casts a respectful, appreciative, almost grateful look back at the last few years ". In a review by Backspin Hip Hop magazine , Chronicle 3 was rated seven out of ten points. Although the sampler unites more “ than a handful of the most important German rappers of our time ”, Chronik 3 “dominates soulless instrumentals and parts that don't go together. “The basslines are characterized as too brutal and the synths as too cheap. While Karate Andi gets lost " in mediocrity " and Favorite has been doing " the same thing for ages ", Kollegah shows " how good he sounds on classic beat material " on Goldener Ring . With Casper, Marteria and SSIO, the “ strongest appearances ” can be assigned to the guest rappers. Shiml and MontanaMax deliver “ perhaps the best track in history. "

Two editors reviewed the website Rap.de. The editor Oliver sees Chronik 3 " as a show of power, as a sign of strength " of the label. Every rapper gets “ enough space to present himself and his uniqueness. “Although the beats are“ a bit too smooth overall ”,“ the uniform sound ”works by all means. SSIO's guest contribution is praised, but “ doesn't really get along with this beat. Florian Peking from MZEE regards Chronicle 3 as "not a particularly coherent project". Each of the self-made artists may have their qualities, but "they hardly harmonize with each other over the length of the album". This leads to the fact that "the best performance is rarely called up". So in the end it is "just individual songs that really stay in your memory amid the gray mass of uninspired, clapped parts and hooks."
