Elvir Omerbegovic (2016)

Elvir Omerbegovic (born April 16, 1979 in Mettmann ) is a German entrepreneur . He is the founder and operator of the hip-hop - Labels Self Made Records and Division , which he artists like Kollegah , Favorite, Casper , Genetikk , 257ers or RIN published. He also holds the position of President of Rap at Universal Music Germany . He is also the founder of the fashion label Pusher Apparel and co-founder of the water ice cream brand Suckit .

Career

youth

Elvir Omerbegovic was born in 1979 to Yugoslav parents in Mettmann , North Rhine-Westphalia . Omerbegovic started playing street ball at the age of twelve . He and his team won the German championship several times. From 1993 he was active as a competitive athlete. He played basketball in the clubs Bayer Giants Leverkusen and Brandt Hagen . At the age of 16, he competed as a member of a selection team against AAU teams in New York. Before graduating from college, he also played basketball for a year at a high school in Kentucky . After graduating from high school , Omerbegovic first worked for a year at RTL Newmedia in Cologne , before completing his bachelor's degree in political science, media and sociology. Building on this, he studied political communication as a master .

In 1999 he met Philipp Dammann as part of a civil service course in Herdecke . This was a member of the hip-hop formation Creutzfeld & Jakob under the pseudonym Flipstar . Omerbegovic began to appear as a rapper himself under the stage name Slick One . Flipstar also put him in touch in the hip-hop scene. In 2003, Omerbegovic was featured on a publication for the first time with a contribution to the song Game Over on Zwei Mann gegen die Rest by Creutzfeld & Jakob. In 2005 Omerbegovic recorded some songs produced in collaboration with Flipstar. With Wo Icherkomm one of the pieces was used for the sampler Schwarzes Gold . Over the next two years, he guested on five Selfmade Records releases . In 2009 Omerbegovic appeared as a rapper for the last time with Brother War , a collaboration with Edo Maajka on Chronicle 2 .

After the Universal Music contract of the duo Creutzfeld & Jakob was terminated, Omerbegovic moved from Cologne to Bochum in 2005 to set up a music label with Philipp Dammann under the company name Selfmade Records . This should initially only take on the function of a platform for Dammann's publications as Flipstar and for other hip-hop musicians in the region. Following a short-term collaboration with Jan Mehlhose from the sub-label Subword , Omerbegovic signed a distribution contract with Groove Attack . The producer Rizbo and the Essen rapper Favorite had already been signed as the first artists of the label. At the beginning of April 2005 the sampler Schwarzes Gold was released as the first publication Selfmade Records . In the further course of the year Shiml and Kollegah also received artist contracts. When selecting the rappers, Omerbegovic declared his " claim to contract and develop artists who [...] have outstanding technical skills " and " that have not yet been heard in Germany ".

At the end of 2005 Dammann left the music label, so that Omerbegovic took over the sole management. In 2007 he relocated the Selfmade Records headquarters from Bochum to Düsseldorf due to the infrastructural advantages . In addition to his work as a label manager, Omerbegovic subsequently also took on the positions of product and tour manager. He also accompanies the development of the publications and " subtly influences the albums " by changing sounds, text ideas or individual verses . In 2007 the record company's first album, Alphagene von Kollegah, entered the German charts. In the following two years the label was able to achieve similar successes with Favorite and Shiml. In 2009 another rapper was signed with Casper . Casper then presented Selfmade Records as part of the Chronik 2 sampler . In the following months, the contractual cooperation with Shiml and then with Casper was terminated. In late 2011 and early 2012, the hip-hop groups Genetikk and 257ers were presented as new additions to the company.

With the release of the album Jung, brutal, handsome 2 Kollegah and Farid Bang rose in 2013 for the first time an album of the label to place 1 of the album charts. After this had also been awarded a gold record , Universal Music contacted Omerbegovic about a desired collaboration. This initially refused and instead extended the distribution contract with Groove Attack. After another successful release with Genetikk's album DNA , various labels started talking to Selfmade Records . In early 2014, a joint venture with Universal Music was finally announced. According to Omerbegovic, the advantage of working together is "being able to act with the speed of an indie and the power of a major ". Frank Briegmann , President Central Europe of Universal Music Group International and Deutsche Grammophon was responsible for the major label . Omerbegovic received the position of President of Rap Selfmade Records and Universal Music Germany as part of the contract .

The following albums on the label King , Boomshakkalakka , Neues von Gott , Achter Tag and Zuhalterertape Volume 4 all managed to reach position 1 in the German charts. In the summer of 2014, the rapper Karate Andi was signed as an artist. At the end of 2015, Selfmade Records presented Karate Andi to a larger audience as part of the publication of the Chronik 3 sampler . Like the previous albums, the sampler also entered the album charts at number 1. Omerbegovic used the publication of Chronicle 3 to look back on the ten-year history of the hip-hop label. He appeared as the editor of the book Selfmade Records - The First 10 Years of the most successful German hip-hop label .

Pusher Apparel

At the end of May 2009, Omerbegovic registered the company Pusher Apparel as a fashion label . In the same year, the clothing line accompanied the marketing phase of the album Jung, Brutal, Gutaussehend , with rappers Kollegah and Farid Bang presenting the label's products in their music videos, in press photos and in the illustrations of the booklet. Pusher Apparel is part of the Bravado Merchandise GmbH network , a subcontractor of the Universal Music Group led by Frank Briegmann . The products of the fashion label are primarily aimed at male, sporty customers between the ages of thirteen and 28. The sale takes place exclusively via the company's online shop . In June 2016 the rappers Gzuz and Bonez MC of the 187 street gang signed a cooperation agreement with Pusher Apparel . At the same time, they published their first streetwear collection through the label.

Suckit

At the beginning of 2014 Omerbegovic founded Suckit GmbH together with the founders of the company true fruits , Marco Knauf and Inga Koster, as well as Maximilian Scharpenack. This specializes in the production of alcoholic water ice . Suckit was able to sell 30,000 units of the product through their company's website shortly after it went on sale in April 2014. The product is now in the assortment of numerous supermarkets. According to the company, 750,000 units of the ice were sold in the first two years, 500,000 of them in 2015. In 2016, 1.4 million units were sold. In October 2016 the company was presented by Omerbegovic and Scharpenack in the show The Lions' Den . However, the investors involved refrained from acquiring shares in the company. So far, MoTrip , Marteria , Farid Bang, KC Rebell , Schwesta Ewa , 257ers , Favorite , Joko Winterscheidt , Klaas Heufer-Umlauf and Micaela Schäfer have appeared with the product.

In 2016, Omerbegovic founded the Division label in collaboration with Michael and Markus Weicker from the video agency The Factory . On this the hip-hop musician RIN was signed as the first artist. From the end of January 2017, the videos Blackout , I want that you need me , Doverstreet and Bros were released as the first releases from RIN's debut album on the company's YouTube channel. The founding of the label was officially announced on May 30, 2017. According to Omerbegovic, the division represents “ a new green area that is particularly agile ”.
