Schwarzes Gold is a sampler from the Selfmade Records label . It was the first release of the independent label on April 4, 2005. It is distributed by Groove Attack GmbH . Schwarzes Gold was released as a CD and a vinyl version.

background

In 2005 Flipstar, rapper from the Creutzfeld & Jakob group , and Slick One founded the independent label Selfmade Records in Bochum . The Essen- born Favorite was the first rapper to be signed. This is also represented on the sampler with the song Ruhrpott 4 Life . The two founders can also be heard with musical contributions on the publication. In addition, Schwarzes Gold is to represent hip-hop music from the Ruhr area . These include ABS, On an On, Brenna & Desasta, Terence Chill and Dike D. In an interview, Slick One explained the background to the publication: “Our background idea was to first reach the Ruhr so that people notice that it does something. ”When selecting the performers, Flipstar and Slick One listened to a large number of hip-hop musicians and made a selection from them. According to Flipstar, the sampler cannot offer an “absolute overview” of all the rappers in the Ruhr area, nor does it reflect the entire area, but primarily stands for “the younger generation's battle rap tendency”.

production

The main producers are Flipstar and I Pro-Deuce. Flipstar provided the beats and melodies of the tracks Kein Schöne Land und Ruff, Rugged 'n' Raw and, in collaboration with I Pro-Deuce, Wo Ich Herkomm , Ich aim auf das Bizz and What goes on with. I Pro-Deuce is also responsible for the productions for Intro , Witten Untouchables and Magic Mess . Terence Chill produced his solo title Schandfleck , Rizbo Ruhrpott 4 Life , Discopolo Auf Eine Ebene , Monroe Danke and Paul Dammerau Einfach . We Got Soul were also responsible for the background music to Stadtstreicher , Brenna for Represent us on the streets and EVGZ and Inferno for Painkiller . The production of Never like me was taken over by Dike Uchegbu, Kolja Rötzel, Raymond Blanke and Thomas Viktor.

The stylistic device of scratching, which is typical of hip-hop music, is used in two songs. DJ Schänz worked these out for Kein Schöne Land and Junior High for Schandfleck .

marketing

The label's first video was a so-called “split video”. In it, parts of three songs from the sampler are implemented. The video, shot in black and white, contains the pieces Kein Schöner Land by Flipstar, Ruhrpott 4 Life by Favorite and Where I come from by Slick One. In addition to the video, a snippet of the sampler in which the songs are played was published. For marketing purposes, Flipstar released no beautiful land on the 51st CD of the hip-hop magazine Juice .

criticism

The sampler was discussed in a review on the Rap.de website. Black gold provides a good overview of the rappers in the Ruhr area, but could not meet the expectations of a publication in which Creutzfeld & Jakob are involved. The editor highlights Flipstar's No Beautiful Land as his favorite of the sampler. Favorite, who delivers his lyrics with “power and aggressiveness”, is also praised. His piece Ruhrpott 4 Life attracts attention through punchlines and attacks on other rappers. Jason doesn't convince with I aim on the Bizz , despite a "good rhyme flow [es]". In contrast, tramps by Nelson, Spax and ZM Jay are worth hearing. In summary, not all 17 songs were successful, so that the evaluation of the sampler only resulted in an “average”.

The e-zine Laut.de rated Schwarzes Gold with four out of a possible five points. Editor Philipp Gässlein praises Flipstars No beautiful country is an “excellent opener”. The productions by Terenche Chill, Monroe and Rizbo are also rated positively, with Rizbo contributing the “overbeat of the compilation” with his beat to Ruhrpott 4 Life . Favorite, who is represented on the sampler with Ruhrpott 4 Life , reminds of the early Eko Fresh and can convince with punchlines like “Your cock is thick at most in English”. According to Gässlein, Favorite can have a successful future with the right marketing. The second half of the sampler could not maintain the high level of the first pieces. For example, Nelson’s song is “as exciting as a day in a motorway service station” and Jason is already embarrassing himself with the selection of the title for his solo contribution. In conclusion, Gässlein explains that it is worth buying the sampler, since artists such as ABS, Creutzfeld & Jakob, Mess and Terence Chill make good contributions and most of the pieces are above the "filler level".

The hip-hop magazine Juice rated Black Gold with four out of a possible six “crowns”. In the review, the editors drew a parallel to the sampler German Dream Allstars from the newly founded label German Dream by Eko Fresh. Both phonograms were treated together. Black gold turns out to be strongly regionally shaped. Some tracks in the sampler exude too much bitterness "to really rock". Nevertheless, the claim to maintain and take risks is palpable. Both German Dream Allstars and Black Gold show promising approaches.
