The Munich Environment Prize has been awarded annually by the City of Munich since 1995 .

In 1994 the Munich city council decided to honor special achievements in the field of environmental protection in Munich. The environmental award, the eco-design award and the energy award were created for this purpose. In 1999 all 3 awards were combined to form the Munich Environment Prize.
