The company was founded in 1929 by Theodor Klüber in Munich. Theodor Klüber's grandfather , also named Theodor, founded a drugstore in Schweinfurt in 1869, which from 1870 purchased and traded petroleum (so-called Pennsylvanian oil) from America.

The first floor engines in increasingly motorized factories increased the need for oil and gasoline. The first cars also needed fuel and lubricants, which were obtained from pharmacies or drugstores. The upswing in regional industry led the Klüber drugstore to set up a petrol and oil warehouse to supply all of Northern Bavaria. The founder's son, Friedrich (Fritz) Klüber, expanded this business considerably. After his apprenticeship as a druggist, son Theodor Klüber founded a retail company for mineral oil products in Munich on April 1, 1929 at the age of 24. That was the starting shot for a pure lubricants and mineral oil company. In 1938 he founded a mineral oil factory and manufactured products for the brands Univis, Penreco, Permalub and others.

The company's headquarters were located on today's Mittlerer Ring in Munich. From there they moved to Geisenhausener Strasse. In the night of September 6th to 7th, 1943, this new factory site was completely destroyed by bombs. The reconstruction took place in 1946. In the course of the following years Klüber became the largest petrol station chain in Bavaria with its own business area: The mineral oil company DEA issued licenses, Klüber was its biggest partner with most petrol stations.

Theodor Klüber had recognized that the classic gasoline and heating oil business would be the business of the large mineral oil companies in the long term. He therefore decided to sell the petrol stations to Texaco in 1955 , which was then taking over the DEA petrol station network. After that, he concentrated entirely on lubricants. The aim was to develop, produce and sell small quantities of very high quality products.

On March 31, 1959, the company was renamed Klüber Lubrication München KG and became a manufacturing and selling company. 30 years after founding the retail company, the Bavarian Theodor Klüber introduced a new company name with an English name in order to be able to operate in all markets of the world.

In the absence of a successor from his own family, Theodor Klüber was looking for a company that would continue the company as he intended. Theodor Klüber met Richard Freudenberg at an event. The idea of bringing together the world market leader for seals, Freudenberg, and the lubricant specialist, Klüber Lubrication, impressed both of them.

After the purchase negotiations were concluded in August 1966, Klüber Lubrication became part of the Freudenberg Group . The turnover at that time was about 10 million DM.

As a result, Klüber Lubrication continued to grow internationally, both through acquisitions and the establishment of new companies: in 1993, Klüber Lubrication already had 16 subsidiaries and three joint ventures in Japan, Korea and Mexico.

In 2004, Freudenberg founded the new Freudenberg Chemical Specialties business group based in Munich, which includes Klüber Lubrication as well as Chem-Trend (Howell, USA) and OKS Spezialschmierstoffe (Munich).

In 2008 around 30 subsidiaries with 14 production locations and around 1,800 employees belong to the group.

In 2012, the name was changed to SE & Co. KG, a limited partnership with an SE as general partner .

Production and product development take place from the point of view of resource conservation and energy saving. This is achieved u. a. through minimum quantity lubrication and long-term or lifetime lubrication. Special oils with a "high degree of efficiency", for example, make a contribution to reducing CO 2 , as they reduce the energy requirements for machines and systems through reduced friction.

The “Klüber Lubrication Munich” location was the first company in the Bavarian capital to be validated and in 1997 received the Munich Environment Prize .

In the environmental statement of 1996 and 1998, the company made it clear that environmental protection is a priority.
