The DGMK German Scientific Society for Petroleum, Natural Gas and Coal e. V. is a non-profit, registered association with the aim of promoting science, research, technology and further training in the field of exploration, extraction, storage, processing and use of crude oil , natural gas and their derivatives, petrochemicals and coal refining .

The DGMK awards u. a. the Carl Engler Medal and the DGMK Prize for Young Scientists. The DGMK continues to publish the journal Erdöl Erdgas Kohlen together with the Austrian Society for Petroleum Sciences (ÖGEW) .

History and name

The predecessor association, the German Society for Petroleum Research, was founded at the suggestion of the chemist Leo Ubbelohde on May 9, 1933 to support the National Socialist economic policy in the VDI building in Berlin . 75 people were present at the founding meeting. At the end of the founding year, the number of members was 455 (366 personal members, 63 companies and 26 other corporations and institutes). In September 1933 the name of the company was changed to Deutsche Gesellschaft für Mineralölforschung (DGM), which took into account the then important mineral oil production from lignite and hard coal through coal liquefaction in Germany .

With the end of the Nazi state , the DGM was dissolved in 1945. In 1948 it was re-established under the name of the German Society for Mineral Oil Science and Coal Chemistry . The association retained the abbreviation DGMK corresponding to this name even after the name was changed again in 1986.
