Austrian Society for Petroleum Sciences

The Austrian Society for Petroleum Sciences (ÖGEW) is an interdisciplinary, technical-scientific organization founded in 1960 in the fields of petroleum and natural gas in Austria . It is the sponsor of the Austrian National Committee at the World Petroleum Council (WPC) and represents the interests of its members there. The ÖGEW works closely with domestic and foreign scientific societies such as the German sister society DGMK, the German Scientific Society for Petroleum, Natural Gas and Coal .

The ÖGEW promotes science, research, technology and further education in the areas

  • Exploration, extraction, storage of oil and natural gas,
  • Processing and application of mineral oil, natural gas and their derivatives
  • Petrochemicals

The ÖGEW is the basis for interdisciplinary contacts as well as a forum for the exchange of information and experiences of the Austrian oil and mineral oil industry and the branches of industry and institutions associated with it. The focus of activity is on scientific publications and lectures, especially the monthly specialist journal Erdöl, Erdgas, Kohlen, which is co-edited with the DGMK . It organizes conferences and lectures, including the annual autumn event in Vienna , the ÖGEW talks and the general assembly of members. The board of directors and the advisory board are made up of representatives from mineral oil companies as well as representatives from universities, authorities and specialist organizations. The ÖGEW is based at the Association of the Mineral Oil Industry in Vienna in the Austrian Chamber of Commerce .

The ÖGEW pursues exclusively charitable purposes. The organization awards the Hans Höfer Medal for special merits . A well-known award winner is Friedrich Asinger .
