Swiss Cup 2008/09

The 85th Swiss Cup took place from September 17, 2009 to May 9, 2010. The defending champion was FC Sion , which failed in the second round against the lower class FC Thun . The cup winner was FC Basel .

The mode

Ten clubs in the Axpo Super League and 15 clubs in the Challenge League were directly qualified for the Swiss Cup (FC Vaduz, which took part in the Liechtenstein Cup , was not eligible to play in the Challenge League ). There were also 13 clubs from the first division and 26 clubs from the amateur leagues. They had to qualify for the Swiss Cup in regional competitions.

It was played in a knockout system. Each round should take place within a maximum of two days, but there were always deviations. In the first round and the round of 16 games were brought forward, in the second round a game had to be postponed. After a one-year break, the final took place in Basel's St. Jakob-Park .

1/32 finals (September 17-20, 2009): 64 teams, the winners qualified for the 1/16 finals.

1/16 finals (October 17 and 18, 2009): 32 teams, the winners qualified for the round of 16.

Round of 16 (November 20-22, 2009): 16 teams, the winners qualified for the quarter-finals.

Quarter-finals (December 10-13, 2009): 8 teams, the winners qualified for the semi-finals.

Semi-finals (April 5, 2010): 4 teams, the winners qualified for the final.

Final (May 9, 2010): The winner won the 85th Swiss Cup.

Second round

The teams from the Axpo Super League could not meet. If a team was in a lower league, it was given home advantage, otherwise the team drawn first. The draw took place on September 21, 2009 in Zurich.

On September 24th it was announced that FC Locarno would cede its home rights to their opponent, FC Zurich . Next came the FC Wil and FC Serrières NE her home right at the FC St. Gallen and Neuchatel Xamax from. As a side effect, a discussion was triggered as to whether small clubs should be allowed to give up their home rights; for many lower-class people, the Cup would become a “financial burden”.

The game between FC Muotathal and FC Töss, which was originally scheduled for October 17th, had to be postponed by a week due to snowfall.
