After completing his studies, he was a research assistant at the Institute for Geophysics and Meteorology at the University of Cologne . In 1969 he received his doctorate at the University of Cologne with the subject of investigations into the heat balance of the earth's surface and atmospheric transport close to the ground . This was followed by traineeship training and assessor examination in 1971 at the German Weather Service . In 1972 he switched to the University of Munich as a research assistant and was given a teaching position there. He carried out this teaching assignment until 2005. In February 2006 he was appointed honorary professor for meteorology at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich. There he held lectures on "Natural Disasters and Climate Change" until 2015.

From 1974 onwards, Berz devoted himself to the investigation and assessment of natural disasters at the Munich Reinsurance Company, where he set up the elementary hazards department , which was later renamed GeoRisikoResearch and gained the reputation of a world-leading institute in the field of geo- risk research in the insurance industry. Berz, sometimes called the Master of Disaster , headed this area until the end of 2004.

Gerhard Berz is a member (last 10 years):

He was also involved in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change , in the UN Task Force International Strategy for Disaster Reduction and in the World Weather Research Program.

In 2007 he received the Sergey Soloviev Medal of the European Geosciences Union and in 2008 the Federal Cross of Merit with ribbon.
