Ted Scapa (born January 17, 1931 in Amsterdam , actually Eduard Schaap ) is a Dutch - Swiss contemporary artist , former publisher and television presenter .

Life

After studying graphic arts at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague and two years of military service as a guard officer, Ted Scapa worked abroad for a few years. a. in India , Indonesia , Hong Kong and the USA . He drew for various international newspapers and magazines such as Punch in England or the Nebelspalter in Switzerland as a cartoonist and published numerous children's books and collections of cartoons.

In 1962 he settled in Switzerland and married Meret Meyer-Benteli, the daughter of the publisher Hans Meyer-Benteli. He then headed the Benteli publishing house in Bern and the associated printing company for almost thirty years . Ted Scapa became a nationally known character figure as the presenter of the children's program Spielhaus on Swiss television in the 1960s and 1970s. In 1991 he handed over the management of the publishing house to his son Till Schaap. Through his publishing activities, he had close contact with the critic Erika Billeter, with whom he wrote dozens of museum catalogs, but also with Jean Tinguely, clown Dimitri and Adolf Ogi .

Since he quit publishing, he has been working as a freelance draftsman and designer . He draws, paints, designs carpets, creates sculptures, objects and light bodies. He is also known to a wider audience as the designer of numerous posters, Swatch watches and Pro Juventute stamps. On July 8, 2009, he opened his Scapa restaurant in Lenk . Since January 17, 2010, Berner by choice has its first and only museum: the "MiniMuseum Scapa" is in the form of a showcase in the Children's Museum Creaviva in the Paul Klee Center . Here he leads workshops that are popular with children and adults .

Ted Scapa was married to the performing and visual artist Meret Meyer Scapa (1930–2016) for over 53 years , is a father of three and grandfather of five. He lives at Vallamand Castle on Lake Murten .

His work has been awarded various international prizes.
