history

Albert Benteli founded the Benteli printing company in Bümpliz near Bern on February 21, 1899. With the most modern printing technology at the time and a large, efficient typesetting department, the print shop soon became one of the leading printing houses in Europe.

As early as 1902 the printing house was expanded by founding a publishing house. The Benteli Verlag was created, which initially published political books and documents in Switzerland. Under the direction of Alfred Benteli's son-in-law, Hans Meyer-Benteli, the publishing house increasingly turned to the publication of art books in the 1940s and 1950s. The first high-quality prints of their works appeared, primarily because of their personal relationships with Klee and Kandinsky .

In 1962, after his marriage to Meret Meyer-Benteli, Eduard Schaap took over the management of the publishing house and printer. The caricaturist and artist, later internationally known under his stage name Ted Scapa, greatly expanded the publishing program. In particular, humor books, but also cookbooks and fiction were published. The publishing house gained its international renown in particular through the publication of extensive catalog books on important international art exhibitions. During this time, many publications appeared about Jean Tinguely and Niki de Saint Phalle , but also about Hodler , Picasso , Chagall , Miró and others. a.

In 1989 the printing and publishing house were separated and passed into the hands of the Espace Media Groupe in Bern as independent companies . The headquarters of both companies were relocated from Bümpliz to Wabern near Bern. In 1991, the Tages-Anzeiger Group took over 50% of the shares in Benteli Verlag in order to enable the in-house “Werd Verlag” to be promoted together with Benteli Verlag and to offer both a broader media platform.

In 1995 this cooperation was dissolved again because the publishing programs of the two publishers were too different. The Espace Media Groupe then owned 100% of the publisher's shares again until 2001. From 2001 to 2007 the Neue Zürcher Zeitung took over the majority of the publisher with 60%. During this time, the largest book project was the monumental catalog raisonné by Paul Klee in nine volumes. A large number of artist monographs and the strong expansion of the program in the field of photography gave the publisher a new profile that is still in place today.

Since October 2009 the publisher has belonged to bsmediagroup ag , whose owners Markus Bättig and Daniel Stierli took over the publisher from Victor Heer in July 2007 and initially integrated it into “Heer Druck AG”.

On October 1, 2014, Braun Publishing AG acquired Benteli as well as Niggli Verlag, which are now run as independent imprints. Markus Sebastian Braun has been the publisher since then.
