Josep Maria Subirachs
Josep Maria Subirachs i Sitjar (born March 11, 1927 in Barcelona ; † April 7, 2014 there ) was a Spanish sculptor and painter from Catalonia . One of his most famous works is the sculpture group of the Passion facade of the Sagrada Família in Barcelona.
Works (selection)
- 1957: “Forma 212” - the small concrete sculpture was the first abstract work of art to be set up in public spaces in Barcelona. The inauguration took place on October 14, 1957 - during Franco's visit to Barcelona. It is located on the Campus Mundet of the University of Barcelona in the district of Montbau in the Avinguda d'Arturo Mundet just before the intersection of Passeig de la Vall d'Hebron .
- 1963: “Monument a Narcís Monturiol ” - location on the corner of Avinguda Diagonal and Carrer de Provença in Eixample
- 1967: Sculpture “La mesura de l'espai-temps” - Subirachs returns from his abstract phase to figuration. The bronze sculpture is located in the entrance area of the “Edifici Mercuri” commercial building on the corner of Via Augusta and Carrer de Marià Cubí in the Sarrià-Sant Gervasi district in Barcelona.
- 1968: Monument to Mexico
- 1983: Monument for the Olympic Games, exhibited in the office of the CIO , Lausanne ( Switzerland )
- 1984: "Monument a Pau Casals " in Casals' birthplace El Vendrell (district Sant Salvador, next to the concert hall "Auditori Pau Casals")
- 1987 to 2009: Sagrada Família (sculptures and doors of the Passion facade , doors of the glory facade , sculpture " Sant Jordi " on the inside of the glory facade)
- 1989: Monument "Unió d'Orient i Occident" in Seoul ( South Korea )
- 1991: "Monument a Francesc Macià " at Plaça de Catalunya in Barcelona

- 1976: Corresponding Member of the Hispanic Society of America in New York
- 1982: Admission to the Royal Catalan Academy of Fine Arts in Barcelona
- 1982: Creu de Sant Jordi of the Generalitat de Catalunya
- Member of the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando of Madrid
- Award from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona
- Honorary award from the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de Santa Isabel de Hungría in Seville
- 1997: In a poll by Catalunya Ràdio , La Vanguardia newspaper and Enciclopèdia Catalana , he was voted the most important living Catalan artist of the 20th century.
- The asteroid "134124 Subirachs", discovered in 2005, was named after him while he was still alive. Excerpt from the reasons given by NASA (German translation): "Many consider him the most important living Catalan artist."
