General

history

In July and August 2010 the band was on the road through Texas , especially Austin , San Antonio and Houston , where they found inspiration for the new album. They played three small shows, including at the Continental Club in Austin, on which the local press wrote articles with headlines like Holy Shit , or Sturm und Twang , according to Hoss Power. They also had photos taken in Texas for the cover and the booklet , for example the latter shows Ernesto Escobar de Tijuana at target practice. The deluxe version comes with a poster that shows the whole band in front of the Gay Hill Chapel and the album cover in large format on the back. Excerpts from the tour through Texas can be seen on the DVD included with the deluxe edition.

In December 2011 the band said about the album: “ For the first time I have such a basic feeling that I am completely satisfied with an entire album: There is a reference to every song, every song is mature and well-rounded. The exciting thing about this album is that the sound is so homogeneous, but they are still totally different songs, which is why I can't commit to just one. But of course, 'Don't Gimme That' is definitely a song that stands very, very strongly for this album, because our sound has changed a lot after all. "

In December 2012, the so-called "Black Edition" of the album was released with a few new titles and another included DVD, No Deals with the Devil - The Uncensored Band Documentary . Deals with the Devil was released as a single for the revised new edition of the album . In 2013 the album was nominated for the Echo .

Musical design

For the first time since Internashville Urban Hymns guest authors appear or are listed as authors because the band used parts of their pieces. Hank Williamson also composed a song on Still Crazy 'Bout Elvis , again after Crazy About Mary from the album Do or Die .

The Tijuana Wonderbrass can be heard as a wind group on some tracks. Guest singers are Nena , Rea Garvey , Jesse Hughes and Patricia Vonne. The Eagles of Death Metal and Triggerfinger can also be heard on the "Black Edition" . Hoss Power worked as a producer, arranger and mixer. Guss Brooks worked, again after Low Voltage , as a sound engineer . The graphic design was as designed as an advertising designer for each album the band of Boss Burns.

Explanations of the pieces

Liberty of Action

The theme song was never released as a single.

Don't Gimme That

The funk title originated from a sample of the song Give It Up or Turnit a Loose by James Brown from 1969. Once again, the Tijauana Wonderbrass brass section was used, which could already be heard on Low Voltage .

I keep on dancing

The alternative rock piece I Keep on Dancing is again very dynamic. In addition, there are similarities with pieces of the Beatsteaks . In the final chorus, the overdubbing of Power's voice is clearly audible. The song was re-recorded for the re-release "Black Edition".

Still Crazy 'Bout Elvis

The title pays homage to Elvis Presley by The BossHoss and Texan Patricia Vonnes, with lines like and I if would be a girl, I would marry him ( and if I were a girl, I would marry him ) and and if he would still be there, he would be my teddy bear ( and if he were still here , he would be my teddy bear ). The chorus is sometimes sung in three parts. In this piece the keyboard and not the guitar are in the foreground. Elements of the Presley song Jailhouse Rock are integrated into the intro and the bridge .

My country

My Country is a cover of the Rammstein song Mein Land and was released as the B-side of the Rammstein single. The band had already wished to be covered by The BossHoss in 2009.

Money (That's What I Want)

The song was recorded with the band Eagles of Death Metal frontman Jesse Hughes. The band's backing vocals are used again on the rockabilly song Money . It is heavily based on the version of The Sonics , the namesake of the band.

Run Run Devil

Rea Garvey can be heard as a guest singer in the song.

LOVE

LOVE was recorded as the cover with Nena as a guest singer and again uses the Tijuana Wonderbrass. The piece was used in the soundtrack to the film Rubbeldiekatz .

Dr. Kitch

The lyrics of the song are written from the point of view of a doctor giving an injection; He makes use of numerous sexual allusions (" I pushed it in / She pulled it out ", " I can't stand the size of your needle ").

Deals with the Devil

Extensive auto-tuning was used for the verses to reinforce the criticism of the music business (“ Don't wanna sing like Angels ”).

Reviews

  • Sono (December 2011 / January 2012): “The base from which you start your excursions remains original rock 'n' roll, seasoned with country influences, but this time you have a much wider range of styles right from the start. This is particularly impressive with the first single 'Don't Gimme That', with which the cowboys from the Spree are taking an unusually trendy path. "
  • Stereo (February 2012): "With the pioneering spirit of the first white settlers, they are moving into new territory, confidently staking their claims in the fields of blues, pop, funk and disco ('Sex on Legs')."
  • Audio (February 2012): “Your typical rock 'n' roll is mixed with calypso, funk and pop. That's a good thing, because the songs by the Berlin cowboys won't get boring. "
  • Alternative music wrote about the re-release of Black Edition on November 28, 2012: “A year ago, the album caused surprises, as the band had decided to still be The BossHoss, but still let fresh ideas flow in. Riding High, Singing Low, for example, showed that the rock'n'roll flavor sounded refreshingly new. Or Money (That's What I Want), which swings surprisingly. The BossHoss were able to surprise clearly without pretending to be. "
