The Sveti Sava House (House of Saint Sava) is a cultural monument in Belgrade at 13 Cara Dušana Street. It is named after the Serbian Saint Sava of Serbia .

history

The Sveti Sava house was built in 1890. The name Sveti Sava House is on the attic, on the main facade, above the center of the risalit . The Sveti Sava Society, founded in 1886 by Dimitrije Naumović, a Belgrade coppersmith, had set itself the task of promoting education and national awareness. In 1890 she had the house built as an association house based on a design by the architect Jovan Ilkić . The foundation stone was laid on August 10, 1889. The society raised financial and material resources through donations and loans. For these reasons she launched appeals and sent letters to wealthy citizens. The press played an important role in mobilizing the patriotic public. Immediately after the building's opening ceremony in 1890, the company's management moved in, followed by the boarding school for the Belgrade commercial youth. This building once housed the State Archives, the School for the Deaf and Mute of the Stefan Dečanski Society, the First Belgrade High School and a few others.

During the First World War , the building was used by the occupation authorities. Many items were stolen.

In 1923 a third floor was added according to the design of the architect Petar Bajalović . This led to changes in the upper part of the main facade

architecture

The architect Jovan Ilkić designed and supervised the construction. The house consists of two floors, with a basement and a ground floor. The facade is designed in the architecture of the Romantic period with elements of the Neo-Renaissance. The straight composite facade is accentuated by the flat central risalit, which ends with a pyramid-shaped dome in the area of the roof. The twin windows of the floors with arches are supported on a cordon of cornices. This gives the whole facade a romantic touch. The investor took care of the aesthetic appearance and decoration of the facade as well as the interior. In the lunettes above the windows of the first floor, Jovan Heinrich Noken put the coat of arms of the Serbian lands based on drawings by the painter Đoka Jovanović.

The Sveti Sava House is a cultural asset and has the status of a cultural monument.
