DJ Screw (born July 20, 1971 in Smithville , Texas , † November 16, 2000 in Houston , Texas; actually Robert Earl Davis, Jr ) was an American DJ and one of the main characters on the hip-hop scene in Houston. He is considered the creator of one, especially in the south of the United States continues to be extremely popular mixed media , which generally now often ehrerweisend, after him screwing is called; hence its title The Originator . During his lifetime, however, he denied his competitors, who used the mixing technique he had invented, of any right to call their mixes screwed and accused them of fraudulent labeling. With the sampling technique he developed , the slowing down of the audio track creates a calming effect, similar to that of the codeine cough syrup, which is widely used as a drug in the local scene . In addition, the original song is chopped, rewound , reverb or otherwise edited. His nickname "Screw" goes back to the fact that as a child he was said to have scratched records that he disliked with a screw.

Musical career

DJ Screw was born in Smithville, Texas and started DJing at the age of 13 . A few years later he moved to Houston to pursue his music career there. In the 1990s he worked with several Houston rappers who appeared on his Screwtapes , which were popular throughout the southern states . From them the artist group Screwed Up Click was formed , which continues after his death. DJ Screw initially sold his works from his car, but then opened his own store, Screwed Up Records and Tapes in Houston on Cullen Bullevard due to popular demand. He is therefore considered to be the pioneer of the indie model for hip-hop in the American South . Today, Screwed Up Records and Tapes still exists and enjoys great popularity. More stores have opened across Texas run by DJ Screws family members and friends. In addition to direct sales, DJ Screw's music gained great popularity within the hip-hop scene, above all through the then emerging internet exchange sites. DJ Screw's legacy lives on in the work of numerous current DJs such as: B. DJ D, DJ Michael 5000 Watts, OG Ron C or DJ Lil Randy, who in addition to rap songs also mix the latest from rock , metal , R'n'B , soul , pop and reggae in their style. One can therefore speak of a screw genre .

death

DJ Screw was found lifeless in his Houston apartment on November 16, 2000. The circumstances of his death could never be fully established. The forensic examination revealed a high, possibly death-causing concentration of codeine in his blood, which was presumably due to the excessive consumption of Purple Drank . Acute heart failure or a combination of both factors was also discussed.
