Jalen Alexander Hurts (* 7. August 1998 in Houston , Texas ) is an American American football poker players at the position of quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles in the National Football League (NFL). He previously played college football in Oklahoma and Alabama and was selected by Eagles in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft .

Early years

Hurts attended Channelview High School in Channelview, Texas. Hurt's father, Averion, was a football coach at Channelview High School throughout his son's high school career. As a senior, Hurts threw 2,384 yards with 26 touchdown passes and ran for 1,391 yards and 25 touchdowns. Hurts was selected as a tenth grader for the entire district second team and was named the overall MVP of District 21-6A as a junior during his high school years. Hurts was rated a four-star talent and was one of the best dual-threat quarterbacks in the 2016 class. Although Texas A&M was heavily looking to sign Hurts after the departure of their quarterback, Kyler Murray , the endeavors ultimately failed after Hurts signed to the University of Alabama on June 5, 2015 . He was hired by Alabama's defensive line coach Bo Davis and offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin. Hurts graduated from high school 39th in his class.

In addition to football, Hurts also took part in powerlifting. As a sophomore of high school, Hurts crouched 500 pounds. He later became a regional finalist in the 198-pound powerlifting class.

College career

Freshman season

As a freshman in Alabama in 2016, Hurts struggled to open the season as starting quarterback. Blake Barnett started the first game against the USC Trojans , but Hurts had already taken the starting position in the second game, making him the first freshman to quarterback for Alabama in 32 years (Vince Sutton 1984 was the last). Hurts produced a historic freshman season under Head Coach Nick Saban . He threw over 2,780 yards and 23 touchdowns with nine interceptions . He brought 62.8 percent of his passes to the man, and finished the season with a quarterback rating of 139.12. He ran a total of 954 yards and 13 touchdowns, breaking the school record in a single season for rushing yards of a quarterback, beating Steadman Shealy's previous record of 791 yards. He ended the 2016 season with 36 touchdowns, breaking Blake Sims' previous record for touchdowns in a single season for the Crimson Tide with a total of 35, which he set in 2014. Hurts became the first Nick Saban-trained quarterback to score more than 11 touchdowns in a single season. He was the first player in Alabama's history to throw 300 yards and run 100 yards in the same game, and the first quarterback to run 120 yards or more in multiple games. In the Iron Bowl game against Auburn , Hurts brought 75% of his passes to the man, which set a new Iron Bowl record. Alabama ended the 2016/2017 regular season with a perfect score of 12-0 (8-0 SEC ). On November 30, 2016, Hurts was named one of the ten finalists for the Manning Award , which is given to the nation's best college quarterback. On December 3, 2016, he led his team to win the 2016 SEC Championship over the Florida Gators and was subsequently named SEC Offensive Player of the Year, SEC Freshman of the Year, and All-American Freshman by several magazines . Hurts appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated College Football Playoff on December 6, 2016 . On January 9, 2017, Alabama lost the National Championship to the Clemson Tigers 35:31. The bowl game was played at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa .

Sophomore season

In 2017, Hurts led the Tide to a 13-1 season, securing them the playoff spot as seeded number 4, playing against Clemson in the 2018 Sugar Bowl . Hurts was the offensive MVP in that game, with Daron Payne being the defensive MVP in the 24-6 win over the Tigers. Hurts was benched halfway through the 2018 College Football Playoff National Championship for freshman Tua Tagovailoa . Hurts won his first National Championship when the Crimson Tide defeated the Georgia Bulldogs 26:23 in extra time. Overall, he ended the 2017 season with 2,081 pass yards, 17 pass touchdowns and one interception as well as 855 rushing yards and eight rushing touchdowns.

Junior season

After Tagovailoa led the Crimson Tide to a comeback win in the National Championship the year before, the question arose of whether Hurts would remain the starting quarterback for Alabama. In the season opener against Louisville, Tagovailoa was the starter. Hurts came into play in a rotation. In the 51:14 win he had 70 pass yards, Tagovailoa had 227 pass yards and two pass touchdowns. Tagovailoa was officially named the starter for the next game against Arkansas State. In his role as a substitute player, Hurts earned significant playing time in the 2018 season.

In the SEC Championship Game 2018, he replaced the injured Tagovailoa and led the team to a comeback win against Georgia. Alabama reached a 13-0 record and secured a place in the playoffs.

Hurts completed his BA in Communication and Information Sciences in December 2018.

Senior season

On January 16, 2019, Hurts announced via social media that he would be transferring to the University of Oklahoma for his senior year. As a university graduate, he was eligible to play for the 2019 season.

In his first game as the Sooner on September 1, 2019, Hurts broke Oklahoma's record for yards in a debut game (previously held by Baker Mayfield when he set up against Akron 396 yards in 2015 ) by hitting 508 yards against Houston . On September 28, he had a 55:14 win over Texas Tech 415 pass yards, three pass touchdowns and one interception and nine carries for 70 run yards and one run touchdown. Hurts helped Oklahoma get off to a 7-0 start to the season. The team suffered their first setback on October 26th against Kansas State . In the 48:41 defeat, Hurts threw for 395 yards and a pass touchdown, plus 19 carries for 96 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns. Hurts helped Oklahoma to a Big 12 championship and a place in the college football playoffs. The Sooners season ended with a 63:28 loss to LSU in the 2019 Peach Bowl. Hurts had a successful season with the Sooners with 3,851 pass yards, 32 pass touchdowns and eight interceptions as well as 1,298 rushing yards and 20 rushing yards. Touchdowns. In the election for the Heisman Trophy, he was second behind Joe Burrow .
