Chase Young (* 14. April 1999 in Upper Marlboro , Maryland ) is an American American football poker players on the position of the defensive ends , which for the Washington Redskins in the National Football League plays (NFL).

He played college football for the Buckeyes at Ohio State University . In his final season there, he broke the school's record for a single season at 16.5 sacks , earning him multiple awards including the Bronko Nagurski Trophy , the Chuck Bednarik Award, and the Ted Hendricks Award . In addition, he was named "Unanimous All-American " and a finalist for the Heisman Trophy , an achievement that is considered rare for defensive players . He was selected second by the Redskins in the 2020 NFL Draft .

High school

Chase Young was born on April 14, 1999 in Upper Marlboro, Maryland. He started playing American football as a child and was a freshman at St. Vincent Pallotti High School in Laurel , Maryland in 2013 , where he began as a quarterback and outside linebacker before moving on the defensive later that year . The following year he won the MIAA C Conference Championship with the team. He was also a member of the school choir and played the piano, saxophone and violin.

In 2015 he moved to DeMatha Catholic High School in Hyattsville , Maryland, where as a junior he had 19 sacks and 27 tackles for loss. In July 2016, he was invited to The Opening, a college football recruitment camp. As a senior in 2016, he had 19 sacks, 118 tackles, 5 forced fumbles, and 2 defensive touchdowns that helped keep the team undefeated and win the State Championship. Named one of the nation's top high school football players, he was inducted into the USA Today All-USA high school football team in 2016 and named Defensive Player of the Year by the Washington Post . He was also invited to the International Bowl and the All-American Bowl, where he played for the East Team in the latter. Young also played basketball at both schools , where he was a teammate and friend of future NBA player Markelle Fultz , who was selected first overall in the 2017 NBA Draft .

college

Young received scholarship offers from over 40 colleges before joining Ohio State University in July 2016 and choosing it over other schools such as Alabama and Maryland , due to Buckeyes Defensive Coordinator Larry Johnson, who personally recruited him, and Young for a "guru." "held, as well as the overall approach of the school, which he felt was" family-oriented ". As a freshman in 2017, Young recorded 3.5 sacks, 18 tackles, and one forced fumble as a reserve player. Young took over the role of starter in his second season and stood at the side of Nick Bosa until his premature injury at the end of the season. Young posted 10.5 sacks despite sprained both ankles mid-season, three of which were in the 2018 Big Ten Football Championship game against Northwestern . He was named to the All-Big-Ten second team for this season.

During his 2019 junior season, Young set the Ohio State School's school records for sacks in a single game (4) and tackles for loss (5) in a win over Wisconsin . In November 2019, Young was banned from the NCAA for two games for receiving an unauthorized loan from a family friend to allegedly help his girlfriend compete in the 2019 Rose Bowl , which he later repaid in full. In his first game after his return against Penn State , Young recorded three sacks in his first game. He finished the season with 16.5 sacks, 46 tackles, 21 tackles for loss, 7 forced fumbles, 3 down passes and a blocked field goal. With his 16.5 sacks he broke the school record for one season that Vernon Gholston had set in 2007 with 14 sacks.

Young received several awards and honors for his achievements this season, including the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, the Chuck Bednarik Award, the Ted Hendricks Award, the Chicago Tribune Silver Football, the Nagurski-Woodson Defensive Player of the Year, and the Smith- Brown Defensive Lineman of the Year. In addition, he was named Walter Camp Defensive Player of the Week twice for his performances against Wisconsin and Penn State, and was unanimously nominated to the 2019 All-Big Ten and All-America teams. He was also named a finalist for the Walter Camp Award , Maxwell Award, and the Heisman Trophy, making it only the ninth defender since 1982 to be nominated for the latter, where he voted behind quarterbacks Joe Burrow , Jalen Hurts and Justin Fields took fourth place. He finished his career at Ohio State with a total of 30.5 sacks, ranking him second all-time behind Mike Vrabel's 36.

NFL

Young decided to skip his senior year at Ohio State and announced his participation in the 2020 NFL Draft , where he was considered by many to be the top candidate for the draft. He attended the Combine but did not take part in any training or drill and stated that he did not want to waste time being a "Combine athlete". Young was one of 58 players invited to the draft, which was held virtually due to the social distancing regulations resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic . In the draft, on April 23, 2020, he was selected second in the first round by the Washington Redskins.

Private

Young's father, Greg, played college basketball at Bowie State University before joining the Arlington County Sheriff's office while his mother, Carla, worked for the US Department of Transportation's Office of Investigations. Young has a sister, Weslie, who played college basketball at North Carolina's Wesleyan. At Ohio State University, Young pursued a degree in criminology after being inspired by his father and some of his uncles and cousins, all of whom work in the police force. He has a tattoo of Carl H. Robinson, his late grandfather and US Air Force veteran, on his right arm. Young is sometimes referred to as the "Predator" because he is dominant on the field and his dreadlocks are similar to the Predators from the Predator franchise.
