Mark Nzeocha (born January 19, 1990 in Ansbach ) is a German American football player in the position of linebacker who is active for the San Francisco 49ers in the National Football League (NFL). In 2020 he reached Super Bowl LIV with the San Francisco 49ers.

Career

Nzeocha began his career at the age of 13 with the Franken Knights from Rothenburg ob der Tauber . In 2008 he won the European Junior American Football Championship as safety with the German national team . Because of his achievements, he received scholarship offers from Virginia and Wyoming.

Nzeocha played for the Dallas Cowboys in the National Football League (NFL) from 2015 , previously he played college football for the University of Wyoming , where he completed a finance degree. He was selected in the seventh round of the 2015 NFL Draft as the 236th player by the Dallas Cowboys. After the 2017 preseason , Nzeocha initially survived the roster cuts , but was dismissed a short time later in the course of a trade. One day after his release, the cowboys brought Nzeocha back to their practice squad .

On September 25, 2017, the San Francisco 49ers enlisted Nzeocha from the Cowboys Practice Squad. With the 49ers, he signed a one-year contract. In January 2018, his contract was extended for one year.

For the 2019 season he signed a new three-year contract with the 49ers. On the first day of the season, in the game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers , he managed his first interception in the NFL, in addition, he was able to block a punt in the game . He reached with his team the Super Bowl LIV , which was lost to the Kansas City Chiefs at 20:31 .

Private

Nzeocha grew up as the son of a Nigerian and a Schleswig-Holstein woman with one older and two younger brothers in Neusitz in Middle Franconia .

Nzeocha has a son (* 2019) with his wife Taylor. The family lives in Dallas . Nzeocha brothers are also athletes, two brothers also play American football. Eric also made the leap into the NFL in 2017 , his older brother Steve played for the Düsseldorf Panthers in the German Football League and Paul played American football for the Franken Knights and currently basketball for the hapa Ansbach Piranhas in the Basketball Regionalliga Südost .
