Rakuten KK ( Japanese 楽 天 株式会社 Rakuten Kabushiki-gaisha ; English Rakuten, Inc. ) is an online company listed on JASDAQ . It is among the ten largest internet companies in the world. This was mainly achieved through acquisitions such as B. from Buy.com (USA), Priceminister (France), Ikeda (Brazil), Play.com ( United Kingdom ), Viber (Israel) or Ebates.com (USA). The corporate headquarters are located in the Tokyo district of Higashi-Shinagawa .

Rakuten operates Japan's largest internet bank and most successful credit card by transaction volume. Other business areas include mobile communications, e-commerce and digital content. Rakuten has over 1.4 billion registered members worldwide and offices in 30 countries.

history

Rakuten was founded as MDM, Inc. on February 7, 1997 and renamed Rakuten, Inc. in June 1997. At the beginning there were six employees in the company. In the following years the company grew strongly. On April 19, 2000, Rakuten went public .

In 2004, Rakuten founded the Japanese professional baseball team Tōhoku Rakuten Golden Eagles . In 2008, the first foreign branch was founded in Taiwan , and in 2009 Rakuten.TV (formerly wuaki.tv) was launched. The VoD provider makes films available for streaming; these can be rented or purchased. The offer is also represented in German-speaking countries. In 2012, the Canadian e-book service and reader manufacturer Kobo was taken over .

The platform was considered the world's largest online retailer of ivory and whale meat before it stopped selling. On April 1, 2014, the trade in whale meat was officially banned.

Rakuten took over the VoIP software Viber on February 14, 2014 .

Rakuten is since the season 2017/18 for four years shirt sponsor of FC Barcelona . Since September 2017, the company has also been the jersey sponsor of the Golden State Warriors and has been the Presenting Partner of the Davis Cup since June 2019 .

The European parent company Rakuten Europe Sarl is based in Luxembourg .

German-speaking area

The German subsidiary is called Rakuten Deutschland GmbH . Rakuten has been active in Germany since mid-2011 through the takeover of the Tradoria company in Bamberg under the website rakuten.de. In January 2012, the name was changed to Rakuten . In 2017, the e-book manufacturer Tolino , which previously belonged to Deutsche Telekom , was taken over .

From December 2012, Rakuten had an independent Austrian branch in Vienna . In May 2013, the company started its own Austria webshop with around 200 retailers; in November 2014, 800 retailers offered their goods in the Austria webshop. The operator of the Vienna shopping center Lugner-City , Richard Lugner , has acted as a testimonial since October 2014 . In August 2016, Rakuten announced its intention to withdraw from Austria, Great Britain and Spain. In the EU, the focus is on Germany and France and the Austrian market is looked after by Rakuten Germany. From the start of 2013, Rakuten in Austria accumulated a balance sheet loss of 5.3 million euros.
