Freedom Chiya (born July 11, 1979 in Cape Town ) is a South African beach volleyball player .

Career

Chiya started his career in indoor volleyball and played for the national team . In 2004 he completed an FIVB beach tournament for the first time with Alwie Lester in his hometown and finished 41st. In the same tournament in 2005, he improved to 25th place alongside Andile Masinga . After a year without international appearances, he joined Gershon Rorich at the Fortaleza Open in 2007 and reached 33rd place. From 2008 to 2010 he was again inactive internationally.

Chiya has formed a duo with Grant Goldschmidt since 2011 . In September Goldschmidt / Chiya won the beach volleyball tournament of the Africa Games in Maputo by beating a duo from Angola in the final . In 2012 they played at the Prague Open and the Grand Slams in Berlin and Gstaad without taking up any front seats. The two South Africans achieved another success in April 2012 when they won the Continental Cup and qualified for the Olympic Games in London . There they could not win a set in their three group games and were eliminated after the preliminary round.
