Horse Guards is a building in London between Whitehall and Horse Guards Parade .

It was built from 1751 to 1753 in the Palladian style by John Vardy based on plans by William Kent on the site where the guard building of the burned down Palace of Whitehall had previously stood.

The British Army General Staff was housed in the building until 1904 . Since then it has served as the headquarters of the Guards Division and the London District of the British Army .

Horse Guards is formally considered the entrance to St James's Palace ; Only members of the British royal family are allowed to pass through the middle archway .

On the side of the building facing Whitehall, two soldiers from the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment are always on guard; the changing of the guard takes place every hour. During the day, when the guard is mounted, this is a popular motif for tourists.
