The Banzengraben is a 3.5 km long creek in the Ostalbkreis in eastern Baden-Württemberg , which flows approximately southwards near the Banzenmühle in the small town of Lauchheim from the right into the upper Jagst .

geography

course

The Banzengraben is created at the southern foot of the Hornsberg ( 587.2  m above sea level ) beyond the open bird field in the edge of the forest of the fire wood at about 518  m above sea level. NHN close to the border between the municipality of Westhausen and the city of Lauchheim . The stream initially flows south-east at the edge of the forest and, after less than half a kilometer, receives an inflow from the north-east from a second source branch, which also follows the edge of the forest. In the same direction it crosses the forest, which is only about 200 meters wide, in a damp alder lowland. On its other side, now straightened and without trees or bushes on the bank, it runs through the meadows between the Westhausener Höfe Beerhalden and Hundslohe on the left and the Lauchheimer Hof Mohrenstetten on the right. It touches a small forest island on the Mohrenstettener side, after which from near the settlement a meadow brook about 0.8 km long at about 498.5  m above sea level. NHN is approaching.

After this longest tributary of the Banzengraben, which flows after almost a third of the course, it turns to the southern course through the area of the city of Lauchheim. On the banks of the accompanying meadows, in addition to the still straight course, there are now sometimes trees and bushes and a few other tributaries less than half a kilometer in length feed the stream more or less constantly, which are often closer to the edge or in the now mainly left it begins with the approaching hillside forests. Remains of a pierced dam can be seen in the valley floor between the single farm Schönberg on a mountain spur in a right corridor from the brook and the hamlet of Hettelsberg above the left slope, which is covered by the hillside forest. Further down, the brook bypasses another old dam and then takes up the runoff of a chain of ponds with a total area of 0.8 hectares, which is located on the southern edge of the Schönberger Flurbucht. After this, the forest on the right also breaks out over the slopes, while the Pfaffenlohe hillside forest, which extends to the bank on the left, continues almost to the Banzenmühle. At this point, the stream crosses under the first and only public road Lauchheim – Westerhofen, emerges into the floodplain and then flows into an acute angle at around 476  m above sea level. NHN into the upper Jagst, which flows roughly westwards here .

The Banzengraben is 3.5 km long, flows about 42 meters below its origin and thus has a mean bed gradient of around 12 ‰.

Catchment area

The 4.0 km² catchment area of the Banzergraben lies, in terms of natural space , in the lower area of the hill country of Baldern in the foreland of the eastern Swabian Alb . Its highest point near the 587.2  m above sea level. NHN high summit of the Hornsberg does not quite reach 585  m above sea level. NHN .

The northern watershed over the Hornsberg separates from the catchment area of the Killingerbach , a tributary of the first larger Jagst tributary Röhlinger Sechta further down the river. Compared to the Banzenbach, the less significant competitors behind the other catchment area borders also drain directly from the right to the Jagst , behind the eastern watershed mainly the Speckgraben and the Rinnenbach , then behind the western one the Scherbach and the Bächgraben below the Banzengraben.

Forest stands on almost a third of the catchment area. In the open corridor there are mostly meadows, fields almost only to the right on the slope of the lower course. There are only five very small settlement areas in the catchment area or on its border, all of which are mentioned in the → Localities section  . Around 70% of the area with the central part belongs to the city of Lauchheim, the rest to Westhausen, with the exception of only a tiny uninhabited forest gusset in the north on the Hornsberg, which is part of the city of Ellwangen .

Arises at about 523  m above sea level. NHN southeast of Lauchheim- Mohrenstetten at the northern tip of the forest of Brunnenholz . At first inconsistent.
Shortly after this meadow brook, the municipal border moves away from the Banzengraben, which now runs in the urban area of Lauchheim.
    • RiverIcon-SmallLake.svgFlows through at about 512  m above sea level. NHN a pond behind the embankment of the Mohrenstetten – Schönberg road, 0.1 ha.
From this pond, the brook runs more steadily.

geology

Layers of the Brown Jurassic are to be found in the entire catchment area, with the exception of only the immediate estuary area in the Quaternary deposited floodplain sediments of the Jagst Valley . The Hornsberg in the far north is a small witness mountain of the iron sandstone formation . Below on the slope the brook arises in the underlying Opalinus Clay formation , in which the brook remains until about the inflow from the pond chain at Schönberg. The iron sandstone already covers the right and left hills again, there the lower stream enters this higher layer; The cause is the natural fall of the layers towards the south-east in the south-west of Germany . At the level of the Banzenmühle, a fault line stretches from the Lauchheim hamlet of Stetten in the northeast to the course of the stream, which belongs to the system of faults along the extensive Swabian Lineament and which against the iron sandstone formation on the Hochscholle in the northwest is even higher in the geological sequence Wedelsandstone formation of the deep floe offset with the small Sandbühl hill in the southeast.

There are two geotopes in the catchment area, both abandoned quarries in iron sandstone on the left slope of the valley in the forest. The smaller one is about half a kilometer north of Lauchheim – Hettelsberg about 150 meters west of the road to Hundslohe and closes at the top of the slope at heights of 530  m above sea level. NHN the lower Donzdorf sandstone, which was previously coveted as work stone, and on top a half-man-high layer of the iron ore-containing lower seam. Bigger is the old quarry on the lower slopes of the forest Pfaffenloh to about 490- 510  m above sea level. NHN , which also shows the thick banked sandstone.

Nature and protected areas

The larger, middle and southern part of the catchment area is part of an almost 15 km² water protection area on and in front of the Albtrauf from east of Lauchheim to the edge of the settlement of Westhofen in the west. On the right in the floodplain next to the lower reaches there are wet meadows.

history

Just outside of the catchment area are the ruins of Hornsberg Castle on the western spur of the eponymous mountain and the Mohrenstetten castle stables a little west of the Mohrenstetten farm. South of Hundslohe there used to be a Lindstetten settlement on the left slope , which today is desolate except for an agricultural building. At the edge of the Schönberg farm are the remains of Schönberg Castle , a castle hill surrounded by a moat.
