Red Velvet ( kor .: 레드 벨벳 ) is a South Korean girl group that was launched in 2014 by the S.M. Entertainment was founded. The group debuted on August 1, 2014 with their single Happiness . It consists of the five members Irene , Seulgi , Joy , Wendy and Yeri .

Since their debut, Red Velvet has had some commercial successes. Their first EP , Ice Cream Cake , reached the top of the Gaon Album Charts in early 2015 . Their first album The Red (2015), their two EPs The Velvet (2016) and Russian Roulette (2016), and Rookie (2017) reached the top of the Gaon Album Charts . Moreover reached The Red and rookie the top of the Billboard World Albums Chart . They have received various awards for their music, choreography or popularity, such as theGolden Disk New Artist Award and the Melon Music Award in the Best Female Dance category.

The Red Velvet members have appeared on television a number of times: Irene as the presenter of Music Bank , Yeri as the presenter of Show! Music Core , Joy in the fourth season of the television show We Got Married and as the leading actress in the drama The Liar and His Lover , Seulgi in the reality drama show Idol Drama Operation Team , and Wendy as the short-term presenter of Empty the Convenience Store .

history

Emergence

Seulgi was the first Red Velvet member to apply as a trainee at SM Entertainment in 2007 . Irene applied in 2009 and Yeri in 2011. A year later, Wendy and Joy were discovered at an SM Global Audition in Canada and Seoul . In July 2014 there were rumors that SM Entertainment wanted to start a new girl band, which was later confirmed by the music label.

2014: Debut with Happiness and Be Natural

Red Velvet made her debut on the music show Music Bank on August 1, 2014 with their single Happiness , which was officially released on August 4, 2014. The song was written by Yoo Young-jin and composed by Will Simms, Chad Hugo, Chris Holsten and Anne Judith Wik. The music video for the song was viewed approximately 2 million times in the first 24 hours after it was released. In August 2014, it was the second most viewed K-pop video on YouTube .

On October 13 of the same year she released the single Be Natural , a remake of the song of the same name by the band SES. The music video for the song was directed by Kwon Soon-wook and Shim Jae-won, the choreography is by Kyle Hanagami. The group started their promotion on October 9th with their first appearance on the music show M! Countdown.

2015: New member, Ice Cream Cake and The Red

In March 2015, Yeri joined the girl group. On March 15, 2015, their first mini album , Ice Cream Cake , was released. The band promoted their album with the two tracks Singles Automatic and Ice Cream Cake whose music videos were released on March 14th and 15th. On March 19, Red Velvet held their album Showcase on Ice Cream TV , a show streamed by Naver Music and hosted by Minho ( SHINee ). On March 27th they won their first music show award at KBS Show Music Bank . Ice Cream Cake became the best-selling music album by a girl group in South Korea in the first half of 2015. In August 2015, Red Velvet gave a concert in the United States for the first time during the KCON in Los Angeles .

The Red , the group's first full length album, was released on September 9, 2015. It contains ten songs, including the lead single Dumb Dumb . The album was a success not least because of the positive reviews. Jeff Benjamin from Billboard magazine The Red described it as an impressive and solid debut album. It debuted at number one on the global Billboard album charts and the South Korean Gaon album charts , and was also featured on Billboard's "10 Best K-Pop Albums of 2015" list. They described the album as "one of the most entertaining and eccentric pop LPs of the year". Dumb Dumb peaked at number three on the Billboard World Digital Songs chart as it was America's top-selling K-pop song of the week. The single also topped Dazed's "Top 20 K-pop Tracks of 2015" list . They said the group had "outperformed their idol competitors". The music video for Dumb Dumb was the only non-English language entry in the Rolling Stone list of "10 Best Music Videos of 2015" added.

On December 18th, the band joined the SM Entertainment Special Winter Project Winter Garden along with their label members F (x) and BoA , and released the digital single Wish Tree .

2016: The Velvet and Russian Roulette

The band's second mini album, The Velvet , was supposed to be released on March 16, 2016, but the release has been postponed to a later date.

The album and the lead single One of These Nights ( 7 월 7 일 ) were then released a day later, on March 17th. The album highlights the soft R&B influenced "Velvet" side of the group concept and a direct follow-up to The Red that highlights the fresh and bold "Red" side of the group.

Her mini album Russian Roulette was released on September 7, 2016. It contains seven tracks, including the single of the same name. On September 13, 2016, Red Velvet received their first award for Russian Roulette on the music show The Show .

2017: rookie

At the beginning of February 2017, the band's fourth mini album, Rookie , was released, which was released at the same time as the single of the same name. The album immediately made it to number 1 on the Korean Gaon Charts and the Billboard World Album Charts. They received their first prize for rookie on February 7th on The Show , followed by awards on Show Champion , M! Countdown , Music Bank , and Inkigayo . On March 31, Red Velvet released their first Sigle for SM Station 2 , entitled Would U .

In April 2017, Red Velvet announced their official fandom name "ReVeluv" (레베 럽) on Instagram. The name is a contraction of the band names "Red Velvet" and "Love", but also allows the associations "Rebel" and "Level up", since in Korean the 'B' or 'P' (ㅂ) means the letter ' 'V' and the letters 'R' and 'L' (ㄹ) overlap as so-called liquids.

On July 9th, Red Velvet released their summer EP The Red Summer entitled Song Red Flavor (빨간 맛) , which is their first summer release. The EP was a commercial success and again topped the Gaon Album Charts and the Billboard Albums Charts . Thus, Red Flavor (빨간 맛) 1 her third number. Album, which makes Red Velvet with the record holder for most no. 1 albums of K-pop girl group.

Irene

Irene ( kor .: 아이린), real Bae Joo-hyun ( kor .: 배주현, Hanja : 裴 柱 現) was born on March 29, 1991 in Daegu , South Korea . Prior to her debut with Red Velvet, she made several appearances in music videos by other artists under contract with SM Entertainment , including Henry Lau's music video for 1-4-3 (I Love You) , and Kyuhyun's music video for At Gwanghwamun . Because of her caring behavior towards the other members, she is often called "the mother of Red Velvet".

From May 2015 to June 2016 she was with Park Bo-gum co-host of Music Bank . She made her acting debut in 2016 in the web drama The Female Employees of a Game Company in the female lead role Ahreum . On October 14, 2016, it was announced that Irene would soon host a new fashion talk show called Laundry Day .

Seulgi

Seulgi

Seulgi (kor .: 슬기), real name Kang Seul-gi ( kor . : 강 슬기), was born on February 10, 1994 in Ansan , South Korea . Before making her debut with Red Velvet, she appeared in Henry Lau's music video for Fantastic from his album of the same name. On the same album she had a feature on the song Butterfly .

In January 2015 she played the lead role of Dorothy in the SM Entertainment Musical School Oz . In July 2016, she and Wendy released the song Don't Push Me as part of the soundtrack of the KBS2 drama Uncontrollably Fond .

Joy

Joy

Joy (kor .: 조이), real name Park Soo-young ( kor . : 박수영, Hanja : 朴秀英), was born on September 3, 1996 in Jejudo , South Korea . In elementary school, she sang the K-rock song Flying Dog of the band Cherry Filter , which they referred to be as the beginning of her dream, singer. They discovered SM Entertainment at the SM Global Audition 2012 in Seoul.

In 2015 she gained public interest by participating in the fourth season of the reality show We Got Married , in which she appeared with Yook Sung-jae ( BtoB ). At the MBC Music Awards 2015, Joy won the New Star of the Year Award and, together with Yook Sung-jae, the Best Couple Award . Together with Lim Seul-ong she collaborated in a duet called Always In My Heart for the SM Entertainment SM Station project. The song was released on November 4, 2016. Joy made her acting debut in March 2017 in the tvN drama The Liar and His Lover opposite Lee Hyun-woo.

Wendy

Wendy ( kor .: 웬디), real name Son Seung-wan ( kor .: 손승완, Hanja : 孫勝 完), was born on February 21, 1994 in Seongbuk-dong, Seoul. Her English name is Wendy Shon, which she wore during her school days at Richmond Hill High School in Richmond Hill , Greater Toronto Area , Ontario , where she sang in the school choir Vocal Fusion .

In 2010 she became one of the finalists at the Koreaboo: Cube Entertainment Global Auditions 2011 . They discovered SM Entertainment in 2012 at the SM Global Audition in Canada. On March 14, 2014, Wendy released the soundtrack for the Mnet drama Mimi , entitled Because I Love You . She also collaborated with rapper Yuk Jidam on the song Return which was the soundtrack of the KBS2 drama Who Are You: School 2015 . The song was released on June 8, 2015. On October 16, 2016, she released the song Let You Know for the soundtrack of the JTBC drama D-Day . On March 4th, 2016 she released the duet Spring Love together with Eric Nam for the SM Entertainment SM Station project. In July 2016 she released the song Don't Push Me together with Seulgi as part of the soundtrack of the KBS2 drama Uncontrollably Fond .

Yeri

Yeri

Yeri ( kor .: 예리), real name: Kim Ye-rim ( kor .: 김예림, Hanja : 金 藝 琳), was born on March 5, 1999 in Seoul.

She was discovered by SM Entertainment in 2011 and introduced as a new member of Red Velvet in March 2015. From May 9, 2015 to November 14, 2015, Yeri hosted the MBC music program Show! Music Core . In July 2016, she starred in J-Min's and Shim Eun-jee's music video for Way Back Home , which was released as part of the SM Entertainment SM Station project. Yeri is currently attending the Hanlim Multi Art School .
