Bae Joo-hyun ( Korean : 배주현, Hanja : 裴 柱 現; born March 29, 1991 in Daegu , South Korea ), better known by her stage name Irene , is a South Korean singer, presenter and actress . She is a member and leader of the South Korean girl group Red Velvet .

Early life and education

Irene was born on March 29, 1991 in Daegu, South Korea. She attended Haknam High School in Daegu. She joined SM Entertainment in 2009 and trained there for five years.

Career

Before the debut: SM rookies

In 2013 Irene was introduced as a new member of the SM Entertainment training team SM Rookies . She was also featured in Henry Lau's music video for 1-4-3 (I Love You) .

Some videos of Irene have been posted on SM Entertainment's official YouTube channel, including one of her and Seulgi dancing to Be Natural , a song originally performed by SES.

Since 2014: Red Velvet and solo activities

On August 1, 2014, Irene made her debut as a member of Red Velvet . In November, she appeared in Kyuhyun's music video for At Gwanghwamun .

From May 2015 to June 2016, Irene hosted the music show Music Bank together with the actor Park Bo-gum . The two got a lot of attention for their good chemistry with each other, their good singing and good moderation. The press called them the best couple in the show's 18-year history.

In July 2016, Irene made her acting debut in the female lead in the web drama Women at a Game Company . On October 14th, she became the presenter of the OnStyle fashion show Laundry Day . The show premiered on October 22, 2016. That same month, Irene, along with her bandmate Wendy, became a panelist on the KBS show Trick & True .

Irene is also a promoter of several brands. Aside from her advertising deals with Red Velvet, she became a model for Ivy Club with Exo in 2015 . In 2016 she became an advertising medium for the coffee brand Maxwell House .
