Son Seung-wan (born February 21, 1994 in Seongbuk-dong , Seoul , South Korea ), better known by her stage name Wendy , is a South Korean singer. She is a member of the South Korean girl group Red Velvet .

Early life

Wendy was born on February 21, 1994 in Seoungbuk-dong, Seoul , South Korea . She comes from a family of music lovers and showed an interest in becoming a singer at the age of six. In addition to her passion for singing, she is able to play multiple instruments including the piano, guitar, flute, and saxophone.

She lived with her family in Jecheon until the fifth grade and then moved to Canada with her older sister Son Seung-hee to go to school there. Wendy lived in Brockville , Ontario before moving to the United States to move to Shattuck-St. Mary's School in Faribault , Minnesota . There she had excellent grades, was active as an athlete and received several awards for academic and musical activities. It was around this time that she began using her English name, Wendy Shon . She later attended Richmond Hill High School in Richmond Hill , Greater Toronto Area , Ontario , where she was a member of the Vocal Fusion school choir . Having lived in both countries, she is fluent in English, and has also learned French and Spanish.

Her parents originally opposed Wendy pursuing a career as a singer and wanted her to continue to focus on her school activities. While she was still in high school, they eventually allowed her to audition to become a singer in South Korea.

Career

Before the debut: SM rookies

In 2010, Wendy submitted a video for the Koreaboo: Cube Entertainment Global Auditions 2011 . Although she wasn't the final winner, she was one of 15 finalists personally selected from 5000 videos by Korean singer G.NA and Koreaboo to compete in the final round in Vancouver , British Columbia , Canada .

SM Entertainment signed her after the SM Global Audition in Canada in 2012. On March 14, 2014 she was officially presented as a member of the SM Entertainment training team SM Rookies . During her time at SM Rookies , she released the song Because I Love You for the soundtrack of the Mnet TV drama Mimi and appeared in the accompanying music video.

Red Velvet and Solo Activities

In July 2014, Wendy was introduced as an official member of Red Velvet . The group made their debut on August 1, 2014 with the digital single Happiness .

Wendy worked with rapper Yuk Jidam on the song Return for the soundtrack of the KBS2 TV drama Who Are You: School 2015 . The song was released on June 8, 2015 and reached number 31 on the Gaon Singles Chart . On October 16, she released the song Let You Know for the soundtrack of the JTBC TV drama D-Day .

In January 2016, Wendy became a regular podium guest at We Got Married and took part in the music show King of Mask Singer as a candidate under the name Space Beauty Maetel . In March 2016 she produced the duet Spring Love with Eric Nam for the SM Entertainment SM Station project. The song reached number 7 on the Gaon Digital Charts . In July 2016, Wendy released the OST Don't Push Me for the TV drama Uncontrollably Fond with her bandmate Seulgi . In October 2016 she and her bandmate Irene became a permanent podium guest at the KBS show Trick & True . In December 2016 she contributed two more songs to the SM Station project. On the one hand Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas in collaboration with the pianist Moon Jung-jae and the violinist Nile Lee, and on the other hand Sound of Your Heart in collaboration with some artists from SM Entertainment. In the same month she had a feature in the English version of Ricky Martin songs Vente Pa 'Ca .

Wendy and Seulgi released the song I Can Only See You for the OST of the KBS2 TV drama Hwarang in January 2017 . In February, she sang the Korean version of the song My Time which is part of the soundtrack of the Disney Channel series Elena by Avalor and appeared in the accompanying music video. In the same month she became the presenter of the KBS World Show K-Rush . On October 27, she and Kangta released a remake of the song 인형 (Doll) by Shinhwa members Shin Hye-sung and Lee Ji-hoon from 2001 as part of the second season of the SM Station project. The recordings of the live concert of the song at SMTOWN LIVE TOUR V in JAPAN were used for the music video . It was released on the same day as the song. On December 2nd, she released the duet The Little Match Girl with Baek A-yeon .

On October 19, 2018, the song Written in the Stars will be released, which Wendy recorded with the American singer John Legend in Los Angeles . The duet is intended to pay homage to the golden age of Hollywood .

On December 25, 2019, Wendy had an accident during a rehearsal at the 2019 SBS Gayo Daejeon. Due to non-compliance with the safety measures on the part of the organizers and a non-existent stair lift, she fell about 2.5 meters. The resulting injuries include a pelvic fracture , a broken wrist, and a broken cheekbone.
