Tony Simmons

Tony Simmons (actually Anthony Derrick Simmons; born October 6, 1948 in Maesteg , Bridgend ) is a former British long-distance runner .

At the World Cross Country Championships in 1973 in Waregem, he finished 32nd for England .

In 1974 he finished seventh over 10,000 m for England at the British Commonwealth Games in Christchurch . At the European Athletics Championships in Rome , he won silver over the same distance.

At the Cross Country World Championships in 1975 in Rabat, he came in 39th place and won silver with the English team.

In 1976 he won silver in the individual standings and gold with the English team at the Cross Country World Championships in Chepstow . At the Olympic Games in Montreal he was fourth in the 10,000 m in 27: 56.26 minutes, just over a second behind bronze medalist Brendan Foster .

At the 1977 Cross Country World Championships in Düsseldorf, he finished eighth in the individual ranking and again won silver with the English team.

In 1978 he was fourth at the World Cross Country Championships in Glasgow and won bronze with the English team. In May he won the English championship in the marathon , and in June he set a world record of 1:02:47 h in the half marathon . At the Commonwealth Games in Edmonton he was starting sixth over 10,000 m and seventh over 5000 m for Wales . At the EM marathon in Prague he came in 13th.

He started four more times at the Cross Country World Championships for Wales: in 1979 in Limerick he was fourth, in 1981 in Madrid he was ranked 172, in 1984 in East Rutherford ranked 169 and 1987 in Warsaw ranked 199th.

In 1975 he became English champion in cross-country running and in 1978 in marathon. He was twice Welsh champion in cross-country running (1969, 1980) and once each in the mile run (1967), 5000 m (1978) and 10,000 m (1979).
