Collagen type VIII, alpha 2 is a network-forming collagen that the gene COL8A2 is encoded. It forms homo- or heterotrimers with the related collagen type VIII, alpha 1 , which in turn form collagen fibrils of type VIII.

properties

The protein COL8A2 is part of the basement membrane of the endothelial cell layer of the cornea . It is also an integral part of the subendothelial layer of connective tissue cells in blood vessels . It is also necessary for the migration and proliferation of smooth muscle cells in the tunica media of the blood vessels and thus has a potential role in maintaining the integrity and structure of the vascular wall of blood vessels, particularly in atherogenesis .
