Book cover from Maastricht

The so-called book cover from Maastricht , which is exhibited today in the arts and crafts collection of the Musée du Louvre ( Département des objets d'art du musée du Louvre ) in Paris , comes from the treasury of the former cathedral in Maastricht . The book cover, an Ottonian work from the Rhine-Maas area or the Regensburg area, is dated to the first half of the 11th century, the reign of the last emperor from the Otton family . The Maastricht book cover came to Paris in 1795 during the French Revolutionary Wars .

description

The book cover consists of a box made of gilded wood and uses a variety of enamel and goldsmith techniques . It is set with numerous cabochons and decorated with niello and filigree work . In the center of the book cover, the crucifixion of Christ is depicted from chased gold under an arch . Mary and John stand under the cross , the figures above the cross symbolize the sun and moon. The symbols of the four evangelists are shown in email at the corners of the cover . The eagle of John and the lion of Mark are made in the full melt process, the bull of Luke and the winged man of Matthew in the sink melt process .

On the edge of the book cover the - incomplete - inscription "BEATRIX ME IN HONORE / DEI OIPOTENTIS / EIVS FIERI PRECEPIT / ET OMNIV SC ORVM" can be read. From this emerges a client named Beatrix, who, however, cannot be clearly identified. It could be Beatrix von Franzien (around 938–987), the wife of Friedrich I , the Count of Bar and Duke of Upper Lorraine . Also Beatrix von Lothringen (1017-1076), daughter of Friedrich II. , Also Count von Bar and Duke of Upper Lorraine, could be meant, but perhaps also the daughter of Hermann II , the Duke of Swabia , who died after 1025 , and wife of the Duke of Carinthia Adalbero von Eppenstein .
