Career

As a teenager, Rosemary Wanjiru moved to Japan to compete for the athletics team of the Aomori Yamada High School in Aomori from 2011 . In 2012 and 2013, she set the best time for each stage of the national Ekiden High School Championships ( English All-Japan High School Ekiden Championship ), a popular relay race in which 5 runners per school complete the half-marathon distance. After graduating from school, she joined the company team at the Starts holding company in 2014 .

In her first international outing in September 2015, the Africa Games in Brazzaville , Wanjiru won silver over 5000 meters just behind her compatriot Margaret Chelimo Kipkemboi . In August she qualified at the Kenyan championships with third place over 10,000 meters for the world championships in Doha, where she finished fourth in a tactical race in 30: 35.75 min. In the following year, 2020, when she started again in Valencia, she stayed four seconds behind the winner Sheila Chepkirui with 29:50 minutes for the first time under 30 minutes, which means she was third in the all-time world best list over 10 kilometers. Five weeks later she made her debut at the RAK half marathon with 1:05:34 h over the half marathon , she was only beaten by Ababel Yeshaneh and Brigid Kosgei , both of them in 1:04:31 h and 1:04:49 h respectively undercut old world record time.
