The Freiherr-vom-Stein-Gymnasium is a traditional high school in the Berlin district of Spandau . It is named after the Prussian statesman Heinrich Friedrich Karl vom Stein . The school was divided into two building complexes: the main building in Galenstrasse ( grades 9-12) and a branch in Carl-Schurz-Strasse 59 (grades 5-8) in the old town of Spandau . However, this peculiarity is no longer preserved, as with the opening of Building C in 2017, all grades were moved to one location.

history

The school opened in 1906, but its history dates back to the 19th century. At that time Spandau was still an independent garrison town with around 65,000 inhabitants. Lord Mayor Friedrich Koeltze (1852–1939) complained about the lack of cultural institutions in Spandau, but the realization of Koeltze's idea was postponed for the time being due to a lack of money and other problems such as poor hygiene and a lack of economy. Later in 1869, 1874 and 1889 the city of Spandau also planned a secondary school in Moltkestrasse (since 1963: Galenstrasse), but again there was no money.

In 1905, the city ​​council submitted another application to build a secondary school in the building of the 2nd community school in Moltkestrasse, and after many negotiations they were able to obtain a building permit. The total cost of redesigning the school was 40,000  marks (adjusted for purchasing power in today's currency: around 255,000 euros), of which 25,000 marks for a new gym.

On February 3, 1906, the construction work was completed and the school was officially opened. At that time it was still considered a secondary school for boys with the director Richard Neuse . Today the school belongs to the former building of the Spandauer Kant-Gymnasium (since 1972 in Bismarckstraße) located in Carl-Schurz-Straße 59, which is called Dependance or "Filiale" due to the distance to the main school building .

Express high school diploma

A school experiment carried out several years ago made it possible to achieve the Abitur a year earlier by skipping the 8th grade and distributing the learning material to grades 5 to 10. From the 11th grade onwards, the pupils attend the upper school level . Since the 11th grade at Berlin grammar schools was abolished, pupils who passed the secondary school leaving certificate (MSA, 10th grade) have immediately reached the upper school level, which means that there was a double year in 2010–2012. Students who did not achieve the respective class goal had to leave the project.
