Klemens Wittig (born August 11, 1937 ) is a German middle-distance and long-distance runner . He is one of the most successful senior athletes in the country and holds several age class records both nationally and internationally.

Life

Wittig ran his first marathon in 1986 at the age of 49 . Previously a heavy smoker, at the age of 40 - motivated by young people as leaders of morning exercise courses at youth camps and as part of the trim exercise at the time - he changed his life when he started jogging after he had noticed the first negative effects of smoking himself. Before that, however, he was already active in various sports. Many city marathons followed in Germany and internationally with times mostly under three hours.

After his retirement, he started competitive sports at the age of 64. In addition to running, Klemens Wittig also practices cycling and mountaineering as hobbies. Among other things, he received the awards Sportsman of the Year in Dortmund (2007) and DLV Senior Sportsman of the Year (2013).

After Wittig missed the first senior marathon championships in Wroclaw in September 2017 due to illness, he spontaneously registered for the Frankfurt Marathon with an integrated German championship in the 2017 marathon. His goal was to win the title in his age group and beat the old European record. Despite lumbago the day before, adverse circumstances with strong gusts of wind during the race and a fall at kilometer 34 (diagnosis later broken collarbone ) , he was able to achieve these goals accompanied by the Hessischer Rundfunk in its live television broadcast with a time of 3:39:54 h. He clearly undercut the old German best of Heinrich Gutbier from 2003 with 3:50:55 h and also the European record of 3:46:03 h from Italian Antonio Cabaneto from 2011. Wittig's time is also the third fastest so far run marathon of the world in the age group M80 (record holder Ed Whitlock with 3:15:54 h).

Klemens Wittig is married and lives in Dortmund . He ran his personal best in the marathon of 2: 50.16  hours in the M55 age group at the Hanover Marathon .
