Eliud Kiptanui (born June 6, 1989 ) is a Kenyan marathon runner .

The fourth of six siblings, he grew up in Kaptagat near Eldoret . He started running at the age of 16, but then had to leave school because his family could no longer afford the school fees. Without belonging to a training group, he was able to assert himself among top runners in a 15 km run at the high altitude of Eldoret in 2008 with a time of 47 minutes.

In 2009 he was hired to set the pace for the 3000 meter run of the Bislett Games and finished in 8: 04.57 minutes.

His breakthrough came in December of the same year, when he won the Safaricom marathon in Kisumu in 2:12:17 h despite difficult external conditions and was almost seven minutes ahead of the runner-up.

He was then signed by the German manager Volker Wagner . Kiptanui was supposed to start at the Vienna City Marathon in 2010 , but the volcanic eruption of Eyjafjallajökull prevented him from arriving by plane in time.

Instead, he entered the Prague Marathon three weeks later , where he improved the course record by more than two minutes to 2:05:39 h. In autumn he finished fifth in the Berlin Marathon in 2:08:05.

In 2015 he finished second there in a personal best of 2:05:21 h. In 2017 he won the Ottawa Marathon .
