At the XI. A water polo tournament was held at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin . The venue was the Olympic swimming stadium .
Seven of the 16 national teams trained in the open-air swimming pool in Nauen , including silver medalists from Germany, Uruguay, Malta, Austria, Iceland, Holland and Switzerland. The Nauen and Spandau water polo players helped out as training opponents.

The two best teams in each of the four preliminary round groups qualified for the intermediate round, while the third and fourth placed teams were eliminated. The two best teams of both groups in the intermediate round played for places 1 to 4, the others for places 5 to 8. Direct encounters in the preliminary and intermediate round counted for the following series.
