Olympic swimming stadium Berlin
The Olympia-Schwimmstadion Berlin , current name Sommerbad Olympiastadion , is a public Berlin swimming pool (outdoor pool) under the direction of the Berliner Bäder-Betriebe . It was the venue for the XI swimming competitions . 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin . To the north, right next to the Olympic Stadium , it is part of the Olympic site (formerly Reichssportfeld ).
history
The facility, built in 1935, consists of a 50-meter × 21-meter swimming pool, a 20-meter × 20-meter diving pool with a 10-meter diving tower , two non-swimmer pools and an adjoining sunbathing area. To the side of the two main pools are two spectator stands with 7,600 seats, which were expanded to a total of 18,500 seats for the 1936 Olympic Games with additional wooden stands. Changing rooms, sanitary facilities and technical facilities are located below the grandstands. The grandstands are in need of renovation and are closed to visitors.
The water basins fed with fresh water from Berliner Wasserbetriebe have their own filter and circulation system and can also be heated. The fact that for the first time in Olympic competitions the water temperature could be kept at at least 21 degrees Celsius attracted worldwide attention at the time.
After the end of the war, the facility - largely spared from war damage (in contrast to the rest of the Olympic site ) - was reopened to the public on June 20, 1945. In 1978, on the occasion of the III. Swimming World Championships , the venue was completely modernized. Another renovation took place in 2015/2016, in which the tiled surfaces of the pools were replaced by stainless steel and the pool water technology and pool surrounds were renewed.
The swimming stadium, which has hardly changed from the outside since its construction, is open between May and September every year for bathers for recreation, for club and school sports and as a training facility.
