Roland Freund (born June 17, 1955 in Timișoara , Romania ) is a former German water polo player and later team doctor for the German national water polo team.

After Roland Freund had already participated in the Romanian junior selection, the German-born water polo player came to Krefeld in 1974, where he played for Aegir Uerdingen . In 1978 he moved to Berlin and played for the Wasserfreunde Spandau 04 for nine years . With Spandau, the attacking player won nine German championship titles; In 1982, 1984 and 1985 the team won the European Champion Clubs' Cup.

Roland Freund made his debut in the German national team in 1975 and took sixth place with the German team at the World Cup in Cali. In 1976 he took part in the Olympic Games in Montreal and, as in the 1975 World Cup, came in sixth. After another sixth place at the European Championship in 1977 and seventh place at the World Championship in 1978, the European Championship title followed in 1981 and bronze at the World Championship in 1982. At the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, the German water polo players were among the favorites. By winning the bronze medal behind the Yugoslavs and the American hosts, they achieved the only Olympic medal win after 1945. In 1985 Freund ended his career in the national team, in 1987 he also stopped with the Water Friends.

He completed his medical studies, did his doctorate and opened his own orthopedic practice in Reinickendorf. His former teammate Peter Röhle as coach of the Wasserfreunde Spandau and national coach Hagen Stamm persuaded Freund to return to water polo. Freund took over the position of team doctor at his former club and the German national team.
