Werner Obschernikat

Werner Obschernikat (born July 9, 1955 in Duisburg ) is a former German water polo player .

Werner's father, Alfred Obschernikat, was an Olympic water polo player in the 1950s. Werner Obschernikat played for the Duisburg swimming club from 1898 , with which he was German runner-up four times in a row from 1980 to 1983.

The all-round player made his debut in the German national team in 1975 and made the leap into the team for the 1976 Olympic Games , the German team took sixth place. Obschernikat then paused for a few years in the national team, but returned in 1980. In 1981 he became European champion, in 1982 the German team took third place at the World Cup. At the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, the German water polo players were among the favorites. By winning the bronze medal behind the Yugoslavs and the American hosts, they achieved the only Olympic medal win after 1945. After winning the World Cup in 1985, he resigned from the national team again. Before the Olympic Games in Seoul in 1988, the all-round player returned to the team and was part of the team in Seoul that reached fourth place. Despite his two long breaks, Werner Obschernikat completed almost 200 international matches.

Werner Obschernikat worked for the Duisburger Stadtwerke during his career. Since 1997 he has coached the water polo players at Bayer 05 Uerdingen.
