Sylvie Bernier , CM , CQ (born January 31, 1964 in Sainte-Foy , Québec ) is a former Canadian water diver . At the Olympic Games in 1984 she won artificial jumping.

Bernier began diving in 1973, from 1975 to 1982 she trained with Jean Plamondon, from 1982 to 1984 with Donald Dion. Sylvie Bernier won five Canadian championship titles in jumping. Her first major international success was the silver medal behind Australian Jenny Donnet at the 1982 Commonwealth Games in Brisbane. In 1983 Bernier won three bronze medals: at the Universiade, the Pan-American Games and in the World Cup. At the Pan American Games, the two Americans Kelly McCormick and Wendy Wyland were in front of her.

In 1984 Bernier won two pre-Olympic competitions ahead of the Americans. At the Olympic Games in Los Angeles, the Chinese Li Yihua won the qualification ahead of McCormick and Bernier. In the final, Bernier took the lead in the third jump and was able to defend this position to the end, winning three points ahead of Kelly McCormick. Li Yihua took 4th place behind the second American Christina Seufert .

Sylvie Bernier was the second Canadian medalist in diving and the first and to date (2008) only Canadian Olympic champion in diving. She was voted Canada's Sportswoman of the Year in 1984 by the Canadian press. In 1985 she was inducted into the Order of Canada and in 1996 into the International Swimming Hall of Fame . Sylvie Bernier worked for various Canadian television stations for many years. At the 2006 Winter Olympics and 2008 Summer Olympics , she served as Chef de Mission of the Canadian Olympic team.
