Georgia Coleman

Georgia Coleman (born January 23, 1912 in St. Maries , Idaho , † September 14, 1940 in Los Angeles ) was an American diver . She took part in two Olympic Games and won four medals, including one gold.

Career

At the age of 16, Georgia Coleman took part in the 1928 Summer Olympics in Amsterdam , having only started diving six months earlier. She started both in the competition from the tower and board . From the board she achieved the bronze rank behind her compatriots Helen Meany and Dorothy Poynton , from the tower Coleman only had to admit defeat to Elizabeth Becker and won silver. Four years later, Georgia Coleman appeared again from the board and tower at the 1932 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. In diving she was able to win the silver medal again, this time behind Dorothy Poynton. In the competition from the board, Coleman was Olympic champion in front of her two compatriots Katherine Rawls and Jane Fauntz .

Georgia Coleman started for the Los Angeles Athletic Club and won eleven titles in the Amateur Athletic Union . She was the first woman to jump a two and a half somersault forward. After Coleman fell ill with polio in 1937 , she learned to swim again, but died at the age of only 28 on September 14, 1940 in Los Angeles.
