Ronald Merriott studied at the University of Michigan, where he was NCAA springboard champion in 1982 and 1984 . At the national open-air competitions in 1983 he was able to win the title from the 1-meter board, and at the indoor competitions in 1982 even the titles from the 1-meter and 3-meter board. In the following years he was able to win competitions in Australia. At the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, Merriott won his only Olympic medal. Behind his compatriot, the later four-time Olympic champion Greg Louganis and the Chinese Tan Liangde, he achieved the bronze rank. After his career, Merriott trained as an official judge.

Diving wasn't Merriott's only sport, however. He was a successful trampoline jumper in his youth and even crowned himself Junior World Champion in 1976. In 2014 he was recognized by the World Acrobatic Society for his services to the trampoline sport.
