1982 World Water Polo Championship

The 1982 World Aquatics Championships took place as part of the 1982 World Swimming Championships in Guayaquil from July 30th to August 7th .

The unbeaten Olympic champion, the Soviet Union, secured the title from Hungary, who were also undefeated. Third place went to the European Champion Federal Republic of Germany. World champion Italy gambled away all chances of successfully defending the title in the preliminary round and ultimately came in ninth place.

For the second time since 1978, a women's water polo tournament with the national teams of Australia, Canada, the USA and the Netherlands was held as a supporting program.

There were four preliminary round groups, in which the two best teams in each group qualified for the intermediate round of places 1 to 8. In the latter, in which there were two groups, the two best teams moved into the final round for places 1 to 4. The third and fourth placed teams then played in a group from places 5 to 8.

The third and fourth placed teams of the preliminary round groups moved into the intermediate round of places 9 to 16. In this, in which there were two groups, the two best teams moved into the final round for places 9 to 12. The remaining teams then played in a group from places 13 to 16.

 Direct encounters in the preliminary round went into the intermediate round and from this in turn into the final round.
