(11970) Palitzsch is an asteroid of the main belt , the October 4, 1994 by the Italian astronomer Piero Sicoli and Pierangelo Ghezzi at the Osservatorio Astronomico Sormano ( IAU code 587) near Sormano in the province of Como was discovered.
The asteroid was named on March 28, 2002 after the German scientist Johann Georg Palitzsch (1723–1788), who discovered the return of Halley's comet in 1758 and the atmosphere of Venus in 1761 .
