Günter Kilian

Günter Kilian (born January 29, 1950 in Würzburg ) is a former German water polo player .

Günter Kilian played like his twin brother Horst for SV Würzburg 05 , with whom he was German water polo champion in 1970, 1974 and from 1976 to 1978 . In the European Champion Clubs' Cup, the Würzburg team reached the four-man finals from 1976 to 1978.

The 1.91 m tall Günter Kilian made his debut in the national team in 1968 and was nominated for the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City after three international matches . There he was used as the second goalkeeper behind Hans Hoffmeister in eight games, at least briefly, the German team took tenth place. After the Olympic Games Hoffmeister resigned for the time being and Kilian, who was fourteen years younger than him, was temporarily promoted to the goalkeeper. After a form weakness Kilian lost his position in the club and national team to Gerd Olbert and was not used at the Olympic Games in 1972 third man behind Olbert and the reactivated Hoffmeister.

However, Kilian returned to the national team and guarded the gate at the 1973 World Cup and the 1974 European Championship . At the 1975 World Cup , the German team finished sixth as well as the following year at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal . Kilian was also the regular goalkeeper in front of Peter Röhle at the European Championship in 1977 and the World Championship in 1978 . The highlight of Kilian's international career was winning the European title in Split in 1981 and winning the bronze medal at the 1982 World Cup . Then the policeman ended his career in the national team after more than 200 international matches.
