Johannes R. Scholz

Johannes R. Scholz is a German social worker and development worker .

Life

Born in Silesia , Johannes Scholz grew up in Bamberg, Franconia . After completing an apprenticeship in mechanical engineering , he studied social work in Freiburg im Breisgau from 1960 to 1964 . He earned degrees as a social worker (FH) and master's in management (AIM). After completing his studies, he was posted to Hong Kong as part of the German Development Service , supported by the German government and the Misereor aid organization . There he worked on building up the newly founded Caritas . At that time, Hong Kong had to cope with the enormous influx of refugees from communist China due to the cultural revolution there and later the so-called " boat people " from the Vietnam war .

During his time in Asia, Johannes Scholz was largely involved in the conception and implementation of the vocational training in Hong Kong and the networking of this in the local education system. The resulting concept of pre-vocational schools led to seven pre-vocational schools run by Caritas Hong Kong with a total of 5,600 students in 1979. In 2007, 22 secondary schools in Hong Kong were working with the concept of 'prevocational' schools.

In 1979 Scholz returned to Germany with his family and started working in the head office of the German Caritas Association in Freiburg in emergency and disaster relief. Aid projects around the world are supported from there. From 1998 until his formal retirement in 2004, he worked in the Asia for East Asia department, focusing on aid and development projects in China, East Timor , North Thailand , Burma and North Korea .

Johannes Scholz has been volunteering for Caritas International since 2004 with projects and missions abroad in aid areas such as the tsunami aid in Banda Aceh on Sumatra (2004) or projects in Mongolia , China and Bihar , India .

He was also a member of the board of the China-Zentrum eV based in the St. Augustin Missionary House of the Steyler Missionaries in Sankt Augustin .

Johannes Scholz lives in Kirchzarten .
