La Porte City is located in northeast Iowa on both sides of Wolf Creek , which is part of the Mississippi River basin over the Cedar River and the Iowa River .

La Porte City is located in the southeastern suburb of Waterloo , the center of which is 15 miles away. Other neighboring towns are Gilbertville (15.3 km north), Brandon (19.1 km east), Mount Auburn (12.6 km southeast), Garrison (23.7 km south-southeast), Dysart (24.9 km southwest) , Hudson (27.2 km northwest) and Evansdale (14.7 miles northwest).
