In 1858, the site of today's city was first settled by whites with the construction of a railway line. The name of the settlement goes back to the railway manager Morris K. Jesup . The first school in Jesup was built in 1865.

After the civil war , the settlement began to develop rapidly, so that in 1876 Jesup was incorporated as an independent community.
