Life
Margarete Karoline was the eighth child and fifth daughter of Johann I, King of Saxony and his wife Amalie Auguste Princess of Bavaria. Her full name is Margarete Karoline Friederike Cecilie Auguste Amalie Josephine Elisabeth Maria Johanna von Sachsen.
On November 4, 1856, she married her cousin Karl Ludwig Archduke of Austria, son of Franz Karl Archduke of Austria and Sophie Princess of Bavaria, in Dresden, in the Kingdom of Saxony. Then the princely couple set out on their journey to Austria and were given a festive welcome in Tyrol , which country the Archduke was then governor. The marriage was happy but only lasted two years and remained childless.
On a trip to Northern Italy that the Archduke made with his wife in the autumn of 1858, Margarete fell ill with typhus while staying at the royal pleasure palace in Monza . She died on September 15, 1858 at the age of only 18 in Monza. Her body was transferred to Vienna within a week , where she found her final resting place in the Capuchin Crypt . At the request of the Innsbruck magistrate to keep part of the mortal remains in Innsbruck , her heart was buried in the court chapel there.
